Magpul RLS - A new alternative to the GI Web?

So Magpul has just started shipping a new sling they're calling the Rifleman's Loop Sling, and saying it's a hybrid between a M1907 and a Rhodesian sling. Looks to me like a Rhodesian, with an extra keeper on the forward loop to cinch down on like a M1907 does, or like a GI Web's junk does. Seems like it mixes the faster sling-up of a Rhodesian, with the security of a GI web, without having to unhook the rear point. Anyone got their paws on them yet? They're $20, and look like they've got some merit. Might have to pick one up.

Looks interesting.  My only concern is that it's nylon, and in my experience nylon slings tend to slide down the arm much more easily than cotton slings.
The hardest distance to shoot is the six inches between your ears.  It gets easier when you get out of your own way.  Self doubt and negative self talk have no place on the firing line.
Once a shot is gone... good or bad, it is gone.   Focus on the next one. Make forty good first shots.

Is this the sling you were talking about at the shoot last weekend?

Yeah, I had mentioned it. Got an email that they started shipping it this week. Looks interesting, might pick one up.

Definitely looks good, worth trying since Magpul always seems to make a good product. I'm intending to pick one up as soon as AIM surplus has them in stock to take advantage of their free shipping on everything Magpul.  ;)

I'm a Magpul fan. I look forward to your review.
I got in touch with my inner self today.... that's the last time I buy single ply toilet paper from the dollar store.

I played with this at the NRAAM in Dallas and talked to the product manager about a potential partnership with Appleseed as these are a really nice product.  Understandably, he was a little overwhelmed at the show with product launch activities but there is some merit here.

1) it is not a slick nylon...pretty grippy.  The weave is a bit more like "Cordura" than the slick nylon of other slings
2) the hardware is very unobtrusive -- strong plastic
3) what acts as a keeper has some kind of voodoo magic inside as it slides easily but grips the sling very nicely when set

This actually sounds like the kind of (non-gosh-awful expensive) unicorn I've been looking for to put on my bolt gun and even on my 10/22. Have slings like the M1907 and Rhodesian/Ching styles been used effectively at Appleseed before? I've been toying with the idea but don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a semi-custom piece just to experiment.

I've used my own homemade version of it for a few years on my AR and have been very happy with it.

My sling started life as a Vickers tactical and I pretty much replaced everything but the Vickers quick adjust hardware.

Here's the rifle with sling on it to give you an idea.  With the front loop as big as possible it's adjusted to be a perfect shooting sling that's fast to get into.  If you adjust the slider to reduce the diameter of the front loop and lengthen the sling it can be worn patrol style and even lengthened enough to switch shoulders.

I much prefer the practicality of a large loop,

1907 absolutely!  I've seen a lot of them on the line, it's a personal favorite and I keep one in the kit and cover their set-up and use if somebody shows up with one, but don't otherwise push them like the GI sling mostly because the good ones are kind of pricey.  But a workable 1907 style sling for less than $20?  I ordered one yesterday and will be doing a head-to-head comparison with my current Turner all-weather 1907 as soon as it arrives.  If I like it, I'll likely order a bunch more as loaners.

Gotcha; certainly intriguing. My spatial reasoning is schlock, so the diagrams I've seen online don't help me much with this next question--how well does it handle in prone? I know it can set up to handle like a loop sling, but I've had difficulty wrapping my head around how to adjust it easily in all positions but particularly prone.

I do plan to get one to at least use hasty-fashion using the Rhodesian-style loop on my bolt gun; I figure it can't hurt for twenty bucks plus swivels in exchange for much better quick stability when I need to peg that whitetail in the woods.

Huh-  I thought that was open to everybody, even folks that can't access this area - I see it even when I'm not logged in.  It's in "Gear and Reviews" under "Road to Rifleman."

Funny, I only see 4 sections under Road to Rifleman. They are Skill Sets of Shooting, Rifle Knowledge Bank, Ammo, and Reloading. Maybe there's some kind of permission needed to see more?

Same here.  I can see the section when I'm logged out of the forums.  Someone needs to fix the permissions on the sub-forum.

Same. There are still some regional forums I can't see, either, but I no longer remember what they are :(.

You guys having problems seeing it need to send a PM to Scuzzy.

I don't know why but a number of my Kansas instructors have had problems even though they have instructor permissions to see some links I sent them.

After a PM to Scuzzy he was able to fix it.

When looking at the Road to Rifleman board I see six sub-forums as pictured below.  None of these should be restricted access.

In the meantime, the gist is that the RLS does fall a little short of the 1907, which isn't surprising considering the 3x to 4x price difference, but is solid competition to the USGI.  You gain a lot of speed slinging up in loop of course, but lose the ability to sling hasty in standing, because to loop effectively in prone without canting, the back end has to be loose enough that you can't get a good lockup in hasty.  Some folks will be OK with that trade, some won't.

One of our original lady instructors, Riflewoman, is supposed to send me a few RLS slings. She works for Magpul. I'm going to give some out at the history boot camp we're having next month. Now to work on getting an instructor discount.

The Magpul looks pretty good to me. Haven't tried it yet.  I had a 1907 at one time that was given to me. But then I gave it to another instructor that was really into the 1907. Never even had the chance to try the 1907. Yeah - I'm behind the times. Or is that ahead of the times?

Oh - and access to threads and stuff should be good now. If not PM me.

I've dropped a hint about the discount.  I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

I have a RLS and it is a pretty darned nice sling. I have been over the past month or so running it side by side to two USGI slings (one cotton and one a newer nylon). The Nylon USGI sling tend to be a little more "slippy" (<---Highly technical term I know) while the cotton USGI is not remotely "slippy". The RLS sling is suprisingly not "slippy", it seems that the material used has a little more "rough" for lack of a better word texture and allowed me to sling up very nicely.

I am not so sure about the ruggedness of the plastic hardware on it but if it is like other Magpul sling it should be good to go. Bearing in mind I am not in the fridged north anymore I am les tended to worry about it.
