After the Battle of Monongahela, George Washington wrote from Fort Cumberland to his younger brother, John Augustine Washington, July 18, 1755:

General Braddock, however, was not as fortunate.  Ironically, Colonel Thomas Gage commanded the lead unit, and worked with Washington to form a rear guard to cover Braddock's retreat.
