I saw one advertised on the Fulton Armory site. No idea what keeps it stable and zeroed. Would like to try one someday with a Scoutscope. Anybody here have any experience with these?

Have one on my M1 and love it... Helps make up for my piss poor eyes.  The mount clamps to the barrel and will require full dissassembly of the forward parts.  You'll see a burris scout scope on the M1 in my picture.

The forum is but a blank slate that records what we type.  If it sucks, why is that?  Anyone have an extra mirror for people?

Oohrah

I have one and planed to put a reflex dot on it, and found you really had to raise
your head high over the stock comb to pick up the dot.  Put a simular type on a
30 Carbine and high rings that hold a BSA Pistol scope.  Pretty darn close.  Plan
on ordering a second scope and highest rings that are pratical for the Garand.
With both mounts, you can still use the rifle's iron sights also.   Like you, eyesight
is also problematic.

Thanks for the replies folks! Sounds interesting.

Just be aware that the base weighs about a pound all on its lonesome: add the wt. of an optical sight and you're talking about over 10% increase in the wt. of the rifle.

It's a big, rugged chunk of CNC'd billet aluminum: not much can be done to lower the wt. further w/o seriously increasing the machining time and reject rate, so that's why the manufacturer stops where they do. Absolutely top-notch quality, but it really should be made from injection-molded glass-reinforced thermoset resin of some sort, just to save wt. while retaining the heat-resistance of the aluminum: clamped to the barrel, it's going to get warm, and fast.

As long as you don't plan on carrying your M1 far, the added wt. isn't going to be much of an issue [of course, it's going to be right over your off hand support, not out on the end of the barrel where it will cut down on oscillations], and if your eyesight makes the iron sights less usable, well, you don't have much choice [and you could do a lot worse!]

Next addition: a lace-on cheek rest... ;)

The lace on cheek rest for the M1 Garand is designed to move the shooters head and eyes to the left and up.  This is because the military scope mount was high and left of the rifle to make room for the load/eject area above the bolt.

If you are using the new scope mount that replaces the rear hand guard, then the lace on cheek rest is the wrong item, you would be better off if you go for something that increases the height of the comb without offsetting to the left.

This is what I put on mine.  I have synthetic stock anyway so I didn't mind drilling a couple of holes in it to mount the thing.

Mine is right up on the front of the butt stock where it drops off to the wrist of the stock.  It is just right for the scope out there on that scout scope mount and without the scope I can move my head just a tiny bit forward and drop my eye down to line up with the iron sights.
