Scope Size vs Comb Height (m1a/m14)

i have an m1a with a scope that i enjoy using but i can't get a good cheek weld on the rifle. i got a riser but it's still too high. I'm GUESSING the scope is too big (cant use lower risers). i'm using a 4016x50mm scope on it.

Does anyone have a recommended size for scopes on an m1a? I use an ar15 (3x scope) for things out to about 300 yards, but after that.. i want to be using a bigger rifle/scope. Maybe i'll try a 40 or 42 inch..

What i'm looking for is feedback on scope size, right size and comb riser combo.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but I'll take a swipe at it. If due to objective diameter (too large) you are unable to use shorter rings, then the answer would be a cheek riser that elevates your eye to the correct height. I've always been reluctant to recommend specific items, but I will say that the cheek riser in my rifle has about 3 in of elevation (adjustable if needed).

As far as recommendations for a scope, you have magnification and you have objective. for example, a 4X magnification is a 4X magnification regardless of objective diameter. The larger the objective diameter is, the more light will "enter" the scope (magnification will remain the same); You will have a clearer scope symbology with lower light levels. Example, my 4 - 14 X 40 mm scope has the same magnification as a 4 - 14 X 56 mm. The later would give a clearer picture past the point where darkness would render my scope inadequate.

Once you define what you need the scope to do for you, should be fairly simple to pick the right kit.

Thanks for the info. Yes i wasn't really looking for a brand or "buy this" type thing. The problem i have is the 4-16x50mm is already on a riser that gives about 3 mm of clearance over the barrel from the front of the scope.

I have a riser but it's still not enough. I could put more junk under the riser, get longer straps etc etc. I may try that actually because the primary use of this rifle, is going to be early morning or late afternoon coyote/groundhog control. Typical ranges are currently 120-600 yards.

I think what i'll do is take the rifle to a leather worker here in Laurel. I've called them and they said they can help make a custom riser. That.. might be the solution..  instead of buying several things that MIGHT work... just get a custom fit one that WILL work.

I might leave work early today.

3 mm is over 1 inch. For my preference, if the scope is above the barrel  more than .25 in, it is too high. With a scope mounted this high you'll probably run into minor exterior ballistics issues. Consider a shorter ring, or in the alternative a cheek riser that will give more "up" adjustment; or you might need both.

You are thinking cm not mm. 3mm < 1/4 inch.

Accu-Riser makes several varieties of cheek riser.  most of my scoped rifles have one and I keep several in my gear box for Appleseed. Many shooters have benefited.

Pics of a cheek riser installed on my rifle. Retracted is about 3/16 in; fully extended is about 1 3/4 in. Literally infinite settings. You do need to drill 2 holes in the stock (folks in love with their OEM stocks don't like that). I'm right handed, so the "locking nuts" are in the right hand side. Lefties can have them on the left side. I have one in my 10-22 and one in my rem. I'm a happy camper.

I'm on the fence for which route i want to go.

1. Remove the scope from m1a and just use iron sites (with small riser).
2. Get a smaller scope (40mm ish) and lower it closer to the barrel, adjust riser.

I'm not real big on drilling holes into the stock of my walnut stock m1a. My ruger american... sure.

I haven't seen a 50mm scope on a single m1a... perhaps there's a reason ya?

I realize that this is an older thread, but very relevant to us as well.  So...

What mount are you using for your scope?  There are several that I have read about.  But I have only seen the Springfield Armory one in person.  How do you like your mount?

We are looking at putting a lower power scope with smaller diameter objective.  Something along the lines of maybe a 1-6x, or a 2-7x, or possibly a 3-9x.  Trying to keep things lower in height for all the reasons you mention.

The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -- where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees*. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.
