Chiappa 22LR upper for AR15. Any good?

I found a polymer Chiappa 22LR upper for my AR15 for $200.  It has a polymer receiver, 16" barrel, and standard front sight and handguards, although standard AR15 free float tubes can be installed on it.

I'm thinking of putting this on a lonely lower receiver that sits forlorn in my gunsafe.  Along with a decent rear sight and a telescoping stock it might be a good loaner LTR.  Maybe even put a cheap scope with it, just in case.

Any opinions?  Is it a deal, or too good to be true?  Anyone with real experience with these?

Thanks!
Jambo

Jambo, I have a .22 upper. It's a lot of fun to shoot on steel matches. But I have yet seen groups better than about 16 MOA and that from a bench rest (25 yds), using a scope and 4 different kinds of ammo. It's not a chiappa. I'll pm you the brand if yu are curious. As far as I'm concerned, for appleseed is a POS. Try before you buy, you won't regret it.

Chiappa seems pretty cheaply made and does not have the best rep on the Interwebs.  Personally I would not spend my money on one.  I have a CMMG dedicated .22 upper that is the bomb.  Just my $.02.

Jambo!  how ya doing, brother?   :)

I had a Chiappa on the line a couple of months ago... the shooter was very frustrated with it.  It was "minute of Coke can" accurate.  The shooter's groups tightened right up using a loaner rifle.  I only have one data point to share with you.

Thanks to all the replies, and even a text message!  I suspected "too good to be true usually is", and it looks like it is.  Thanks for all the responses, I'm going to pass on it.  I'll either save up for a CMMG or start collecting parts to build one myself.

Thanks to all again.

Mine was bought used with two Chiappa mags and another aftermarket one.
All three mags work fine.  Polymer receiver is holding up well.

I stuck a cheap 4X scope on mine.  Had to add a riser cause people complained
about seeing the front sight in the scope.  I saw it rarely so it didn't bother me.

It's been accurate out to 25 and 50 yards.  Haven't tried it any farther.
I plan to use it at an Appleseed some time.  I expect it will work, possibly better than I will.
(Still out of shape despite rumors of a plan to do something about it.)

The literature that came with it calls for plated bullets.  I've been using Federal 37 grain plated HPs.  (Got a bunch
just before the panic started.)

I read some bad reviews after I'd already bought the unit.
Have not seen the stuff complained of in my experience.

+1 on the cmmg upper. I found mine on sale for under $300. The manual says to use 40gr but mine has run fine with 36gr hps.

Crap.  I have one and have zeroed it, no problems observed.  I will make another trip to the local range prior to attempting an AS.

I shot a 244 and a 242 at my last Appleseed with the CMMG upper.  Can't really comment with any experience about the Chiappa upper, but the CMMG can certainly shoot.  No doubt in my mind it's capable of cleaning an Appleseed AQT, if the shooter can do it.

The saga of my .22 upper continued. I took it apart, re-faced the crown, cleaned it and re-assembled at the specified torque. Went to the range full of optimism and got the same results. Next time I cleaned it I used the same dewey-parker jag I use on my .223 (snug fit). I then noticed that there was a spot on the barrel where the jag hit what I can best describe as a void. Then it became snug again until it came out of the barrel. I suspected a bulge. not having access to an air gauge, I sent for a CMMG barrel and re-assembled it. Like magic, I can now get an honest 2 MOA. I figure that when I bought the upper at a gun show, someone in the past had a squib, and attempted to clear it by firing a round through it.
By the time all was done I probably paid what I would have paid CMMG for a new upper. Live and learn.
