Synthetic stock - mount swivels - also Savage 64F question

Since there is a wealth of knowledge here on the forum I thought I'd ask two questions.

I received a question last night asking about mounting swivels on a synthetic stock 10/22 Takedown rifle. The guy was worried about the fact that the stock was synthetic. I've done it before on other rifles and had no problem with the hole wallowing out. Any tips out there on what I should tell the guy?

He also has some Savage 64Fs and asked about after market iron sights. I couldn't find anything for them though. Anybody know of any after market irons for this type of rifle? Looking at the rifle online it doesn't appear to have much of a sight radius so I was going to suggest just mounting a scope. However the rifle might work just fine with the stock ones. I couldn't tell much by just looking at the pic online though.

Any advice much welcome.

If he's got one of the hollow stocks, use a thread/nut style stud and/or put a bunch of epoxy around the stud inside the stock to give more support.  Should be GTG.  Never had any issue with solid plastic and the wood screw type.

Just did three 10/22s with hollow stocks and I, too, was concerned about the amount of material that was supporting the stud.  I took a small piece of steel shim stock  (the banding that they use on pallets works great) and drilled a hole through it, and threaded the stud through the stock and into the shim.  I then slathered the shim and the stud with grey epoxy (PC7 or similar).   Make sure you align the swivels the way you want them, because when the epoxy dries the swivels ain't going nowhere.

The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -- where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.

Looks like the sling part is well covered.

As to sights, look into Williams WGRS. I think the WGRS-54 might work, might have to change the aperture.

If it were me, I'd just scope it, and stay down on power. 2 or 3 power is plenty, never over 4. Over 4 might work against you somewhat.

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

=> will make you motion sick in standing.   ;D

Yup - believe it or not though I had a nice scope on one of my .22s that I would crank up to 10 power at 25 yards. Made the target look like a billboard. But then again I'm strange.  ^:)^

I don't recommend that though to most new shooters - it does tend to freak them out when they see how much their rifle is wobbling around with the high magnification. Didn't bother me though - if the reticle was on the black I knew I was good to go.

You ought to see what 24 or 36 power does.

Yes, I've got a few of them. Those rifles get shot from bags, at 100 to 300 yards, and in competition. Makes for mighty fine, very small holes. 5 shots, one hole, 100-300 yards away. Not light, not cheap either. You don't want to know the cost.
