My state senator, John Proos, is sponsoring a bill to introduce "Freedom Week" as part of the state's school cirriculum.  Idea is to have a dedicated time to talk about the founding principles, ideals and documents.

Sounds like a good idea in general and a great time to link up and do some Libertyseed's in your local school.  I'd highly recommend you contact your state senator and ask them to support this.

By the way, I know John personally and he has stopped by our Appleseed booth at a local event.  He is a supporter and a staunch defender of first principles.  Still working on getting him and his staffers out for a shoot, though.   ::)

I wonder if John would be up to introduce a bill to formalize Patriot's Day on April 19 (rather than ask the governor's office for a proclamation every year)...

Did you know that the Chair of the Senate Education Committee has been to an Appleseed.

Sen. Phil Pavlov attended, but we couldn't get him on the line at Lapeer.
Correction, Burbs got him on the line...  I must have been out doing something else.

We could push for a change to make "Freedom Week" ---> "Liberty Week" and move it to the week containing April 19.

Celebrating our liberty instead of detracting/reducing the Remembrance of a tragedy..

I do agree that April 19 would be a better week.  My guess is that because the Sept 11 week has been co-opted (incorrectly) as Patriots week, that they decided to call it out.

Interesting line of thought about detracting/reducing the Rememberance of a tragedy...my first reaction to this was "Great!  I'd rather turn my sadness / rage into a celebration of our ideals (e.g., "you can't stamp out my patriotism with an attack" and "we don't use violence to make statements of political discourse, you heathens")."

I do agree that you don't want to minimize the Rememberance...but I'll have to let it marianate a bit whether it helps or hurts.  My gut was...helps.

There is already a "Patriot Week" in September (9-11-9-17) which is recognized by the state and been around for a few years. Not sure how many of these things we need in Sept, but I am for having another one in April particularly if the RWVA takes ownership of it.
