I thought you guys might find this interesting. Completely different sport, but it's the same full distance principals, only an increased attention to detail.

Oh great.

Does this mean I'm going to have to ressurect the "how far do you need to seat the bullet from the lands based on barometirc pressure, cartridge run-out and humidty" discussion in my KD presentation?

And the rotation of the earth has to be factored in to elevation for east-west shooting, windage for north-south shooting.  Do we have a simplified rule if we're not shooting in a cardinal direction? Someone tell me if I need to know this for Saturday!   :)

How can he hold the bench so steady while shooting standing?
1. Point the sights where they need to be pointed
2. Keep 'em there while you squeeze the trigger.
3. Repeat

Much of what is known about precision marksmanship has come from the BR community. It will then often move to the Long Range Community (800-1000 yards) before finally making its way to the short and midrange shooters (100-600 yards).

When your goal is not to merely hit the target at 1000 yards, but to hit a specific mark and shoot a small group "attention to detail" are the key words.

I watched a 20 year old woman using a Service Rifle this past week at the Creedmoor Cup matches win the standing 200 yard aggregate with a 586  - 14x out of 600 point. In other words, over the course of 60 shots she dropped 14 points while shooting at a 3.5 MOA 10 ring And she shot 14x's on a 1.5 MOA X ring. She beat almost 200 other shooters including those of Team Remington, the USAR shooting team, and some of the best shooters on the East Coast.

In sitting she shot a 600 with 31x out of 600. She won that aggregate as well. She did these things via attention to detail, practice, and keeping her head at a National Competition. Overall she was the top woman and placed 5th. She was attention to detail and fundamentals in action.

So while it may be fun to amuse ourselves with jokes about the benchrest, Long range or High Power shooters. The fact is that they do what they do with a simplicity and precision that most of us can only hope to achieve. The best of them shoot 25-50 matches a year. They expect to shoot cleans (or very close to it). As one joked the other day, "I'm on suicide watch if I shoot a 197 (out of 200) at 600."

Unbridled Liberty

Beautiful rifle and cartridges!  I just hope the shooter knows what happened on April 19, 1775, and that he does everything he can to preserve Liberty for his descendants.

It might behoove one not to assume that lack of knowledge of April 19, 1775 means a failure to understand freedom and responsibility. There are many people in this country who have never read Paul Revere's Ride who are committed and take seriously their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution.

I appreciate the technological trickle-down effect of the Bench Rest shooters. Their craft has helped us all tremendously over the years. I'm new to long Range shooting and am enjoying as I learn. Though I have to admit there is something very unique about shooting with some seasoned Appleseed instructors at Actual Distance (100-400 yards) and for the first time scoring a Rifleman score at the end of a full day. Those on the line understood what April 19, 1775 means. When I get to the end of "Paul Revere Ride" I'm going to read it again.
