I'm now researching what I need to do to it.

Awesome pics! Tech Sights and a nylon or cotton GI sling would be nice additions.

Great job, Dad!  You might consider a low power scope if she has never shot with iron sights.  I find that a scope lets a kid focus on position and trigger.  Like teaching her to hit a softball off a tee before you throw her live pitching.  (Then again, my kids were never great hitters!)

STF

HAHA, thanks guys.

LawDog
A couple years ago I got her a BB gun and she surprised me how accurate she was with the iron sights on that. I really want her to learn iron sights anyways but that doesn't mean I won't get her a gun with a scope on it one day.

BeSwift
I had to look at the picture again to make sure she didn't have her finger on the trigger LOL. I've taught her that but it doesn't always sink in...

I have a guy helping me get the right stuff for it. He is telling me I should get the TSR100... Something about the front sight bottoming out and some other small issues. I want to try and find a sling that it pink or purple for her but still functional like the USGI sling. I really want to make this rifle her own and something she is proud of.

LawDog, It's funny you mention softball cause she's is big time into that. Here she is catching.

Tech Sights (the front post can be replaced with any AR front post and a square A2 style shows up sharper then the taper of the stock Tech Sight front)

Daisy (yup the BB gun folks) make a rear sight that I like for LTRs.  Pretty sure there's a thread on here about it somewhere.  It give a little more adjustment than the Tech Sight rear for both windage and elevation. (It's the Daisy 5899 rear sight, Pyramyd Air carries them for $25)

An auto bolt release.  Either an aftermarket part or modify the factory bolt release.

1 1/4" sling swivels and a U.S. G. I. web sling.

Extra magazine(s).  Certain strings will require magazine changes.  Have at least two magazines, four is nice.

Fearful but resolute.

BTW my daughter who is 10 years old, said that her purple rifle is AWESOME!

I was going to say a can of pnk spray paint until I saw the outside pics.

You will need studs to put the sling swivels on.

I'll second the Daisy rear and the tech sight front.

Good choice Dad!
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. I keep seeing this all over the forum, and after having modified two of my own rifles to have the auto bolt release 'feature', I'm of the opinion that it isn't.  A feature that is.

I don't want to derail this post more than I already have, but if you would like to hear why I don't care for the auto bolt release, just drop me a PM.

STF-
Good on ya for teaching your daughter proper rifle handling techniques, and supporting her love of sports, both softball and riflery.

Very cool and she looks proud to have it!

If the very first thing done after removing the chamber flag in the prep period is to release the bolt, the auto bolt release mod is unnecessary. The auto bolt release can make it a bit harder to get the chamber flag out without having the bolt release at the same time.
The American Constitution is remarkable for its simplicity; but can only suffice a people habitually correct in their actions, and would be utterly inadequate to the wants of a different nation.  Change the domestic habits of the Americans, their religious devotion, and their high respect for morality, and it will not be necessary to change a single letter in the Constitution in order to vary the whole form of their government. - Francis Grund 1837

Go with a black nylon sling until you can find the color you want.

Micah

If you want to put the time in, buy a regular sling, bleach it and then dye it purple.

Guardian

Nice rifle! I agree with Micah. I've bleached and dyed a couple and they turned out pretty well. I prefer to start with the tan slings as they tend to bleach lighter. Note that the nylon thread used to stitch the D ring in will not bleach or dye, but it wasn't particularly obvious either. My wife has a purple one on order, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

It can be a messy undertaking. We had to bleach the counter tops after I finished because of drips, but it did come out. Doing it outside with a fish fryer would be better.

Awesome! I know where there's another one...

STF

Thanks guys,

So I have ordered the Tech1 sights, two slings(one is for my AR) and the bolt buffer.

Guardian,
That is awesome. Can you point me in the direction of a tan USGI sling?

Micah,
Might just do this.

Stand,
That is what I ended up ordering.

Guardian

I've been buying the tan slings from CharleysSurplus.com. http://www.charleyssurplus.com/army_military_field_gear/slings/m1_garand_web_sling

After removing the clasp and "J" hook from the sling, I've been using a mixture of diluted bleach and rit color remover to lighten the color of the cotton webbing. I just use hot tap water and let the sling soak until it's light enough to suit me. Mine have not been white when I dyed them, but considerably lighter than they were. When I am happy with the bleaching stage, I wash the sling in the kitchen sink using liquid laundry detergent and the hottest water my hands can tolerate to remove the bleach/color remover solution.

I've been using rit dye. I've gotten it from Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart. I've only used the base colors, I haven't tried mixing to get a specific shade. Rit has formulas on their website to achieve a specific color. http://www.ritdye.com/colorit_color_formula_guide I suggest using a pot that won't be used for cooking anymore. I use the bottom of a retired aluminum popcorn popper, since that's what I had.

Follow the directions on the dye packet for dying solution. When the solution is boiling, submerse the sling and stir. It usually takes 10 to 30 minutes for the color to penetrate the fabric. If the sling isn't taking the dye, try adding more salt. If that doesn't work, add a little more dye. Remember the color will be considerably lighter when the sling dries. As an example, the purple slings I did last week (finally, shown in the attached photo) were nearly black in appearance when they came out of the dye solution. I really thought I overdid it.

When you take them out of the dye solution, it's back to the sink to rinse in the hottest water you can get. Just let the water run over it until the water coming off the sling appears clear again (usually 5 minutes or less). Then wash it in the sink with laundry detergent and hot water. Rinse and repeat using cold water until the wash water isn't colored. I usually have to do three cycles. If you skip this step, the user of said sling will have dye all over their clothes and/or arms until the excess dye works out.   :slap:

Hang the sling to dry and place something that you don't mind getting a little dye on it under the suspended sling to catch the water. I just use a coat hanger through the D ring.

All in, it usually takes me a couple of hours from start to finish to do a single sling. Thankfully, slings are readily available in my preferred color of O.D. green.

Post photos if you decide to dye a sling. I'd love to see what others create.

Marcus

Awesome, thanks for the info.

I'm guessing those khaki slings are 1.25"?
