I did not see a thread on this and it is now one of the many things in the forefront of my mind (w/ all the voices in there it is amazing there is room for anything else).

I will leave the reason for said question to the readers imagination.

Hopefully not what you have been told BUT what you actually experienced 1st hand.

I can offer up 2 reviews so far:

-CCI Quiet-22    22LR lead round nose, 710 FPS (at muzzle?), 40 grain..........................NO, will not eject properly/will not cycly obviously.

-Remington Subsonic   22LR Hollow point, 40 grain, 1050 FPS at Muzzle.........................YES, cycles properly. Only shot 5 rounds but all OK.

PLEASE add your own experiences to help me and others in this quest.

THANKS!

Try Wolf Match (Target / Extra).  About the same velocity as the Remington.  You will have to clean the action more frequently, since there's less energy to cycle a dirty bolt.

Bottom, line, no matter what one's observation real world experiences are, one still has to try them for themselves out of their rifle. Two identical rifles, one might, the other might not. I can take the one that won't, do a few things that costs nothing like polishing in the right places, now it will. Too many variables for the info to be much use. There is a minimum amount of horsepower needed out the front end for the back end to function...O.L.

Agreed. However a good baseline will help my search and possibly save me and others $$.

An aquaitance at work has a different rifle than I do but so far we both have had the same results with the 2 ammo choices I listed.

If you can get you hands on it, try out the Federal Champion .22.

I use it in my Marlin 60 and it runs better than any other ammo I've tried, but my option are pretty limited.

Apparently, no one actually WANTS to ship .22 LR to Alaska. :sb: #)

I know it's not an answer to the question posed, but maybe use a non-semi-auto ?

consider a Savage Mk II bolt-action w/ Accutrigger.  I know shooters who can make an RM score rapid-fire with one.   I and other instructors have  seen IIT Habs put steel  on target with accuracy at a rate of 1 round every 2 seconds using a CZ-452 and factory Mauser-style sights.  I want to get a youtube video of him doing it.  It is amazing.  He can shoot RM score after score.

Christmas is just around the corner.

IMO, the Savage Accutrigger is nearly impossible to beat, adjusts down to 2.5 pounds.  Fleet Farm carries the synthetic stock model for $179.  They can be found lightly used for $100-125.  I got a heavy barrel variant at the pawn shop w/ 2-7 Bushnell for $225 out the door.  It came in the original box w/ blank warranty papers and had less than 250 rounds through it.

I shot a  T-bolt at the Cokato Appleseed.    Imagine a Swiss K-31 straight-pull rifle scaled down to .22LR.  Flawless wood and metalwork.  Superb trigger. Working the action of a T-bolt  is effortless, like cutting through rolled up grass mats with a live-blade katana.  You'd have to spend $800 on a Kimber 82 to get a better rifle.

I have good results with CCI standard velocity in my suppressed 10/22.  It cycle fine unsuppressed as well.

If you are wanting to be as quiet as possible without actually going with a suppressor, what you want is a bolt action with a really long barrel, like my CZ-452 Lux.  It is almost as quiet as a suppressed rifle when you use Remington subsonics with it.  It burns all of the powder with the bullet still in the barrel, and the subsonic ammo eliminates the supersonic crack.  It is great for discrete squirrel assassination.  :D

That ammo cycles fine in a semi-auto too.  You still get a pretty good pop, but no crack (which is most of the noise with a .22 LR).

Well, it sounds like a secondary rifle may be needed ;)

-I do not want to sell my 10/22
-The more guns the better if the world should end....Barter, replacement rifle, etc.
-Both rifles would also have a place if I kept both
-.22 ammo will be an important barter item when world ends

Just to humor me, this quiet one would be for hunting, critter removal, target practice when stealth is needed.....when the world ends. Currently no interest in the hoops to get a "can".

Thanks to all for the input. Now a different hunt begins - what new 22 to buy ^:)^

It is ILLEGAL to hunt with a semi-auto in PA.  Better I tell you than a Game Warden.   :'(

That I do understand......BUT when the world ends, I do not foresee a problem w/ the PoPo.

Interesting article about quiet 22 rimfire ammo on Survivalblog.com here - http://www.survivalblog.com/2012/11/quiet-rimfire-shooting-without-a-suppressor-by-mb.html

Note:  Most of the loads mentioned will not cycle a semi-auto, but it's a good article none the less.
"Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by a race of slaves.  Sad alternative!  But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" - George Washington - from a letter to a close friend after the events of April 19, 1775

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our (the United States) overthrow.  Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter.  From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger.  I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

You could purchase a new recoil spring assembly and clip some coils on it until the CCI quiets reliably cycle.  Make sure you keep it separate and labeled for use with only CCI Quiets.

To the OP, I have ran Remington subs in mine with no problems.  I liked the accuracy as well as sound.  I would occasionally throw in a CCI stinger just for fun and wow at the difference.

Gemtech is now making a .22lr ammo that's specifically designed to remain subsonic but still have enough pressure to cycle a suppressed semi-auto.  Its not cheap, but its the ideal ammo when you want to be as quiet as possible:

I've tried a couple of the quit versions in the 10/22 and it would not reliably cycle with any.

moreover is none of them were particularly quiet in the 10/22 - I guess the limits of the blow back action.

in my savage mkII they are awesome.  especially the aquila 20 gr... the striking firing pin makes a louder sound; they are not supposed to be for rifles, so if I don't hear it hit the target I check the barrel before I fire another.  none have squibbed on me yet, but I've moved to the cci quiet because they don't have the "no rifle warning"

these are amazingly quiet compared to the 40gr subsonic stuff that runs in the 1000fps range

I tried some CCI Quiet in my 10/22T yesterday.  No go, won't cycle it.  It was indeed very quiet.  Also ran some in my wife's 77/22 bolt gun.  Very quiet there as well, but the rifle doesn't like it.  Groups about twice as large as the Wolf Match Target that it does like.  We may try some other of the quiet rounds in the 77 - might be nice to have a nearly silent squirrel gun.

This is what I use and it is very reliable.  It has proven reliable and quiet in the following firearms: 10/22, Sig 522, Ruger 22/45, Walther P22, GSG-1911, Sig Mosquito (this really surprised me).
