I would definitely try at least compressed air through the gas tube.  Could have carbon / jacket material blocking the gas port in either the barrel or the gas block.  Also make sure that your gas block didn't move and partially block the gas port in the barrel.

Turbo.

Armalite says...

Never put anything down the gas tube.  I did however, and saw that some of the black solvent leaked out between the front sight and the handguard.  The repair rep says that's normal.

He says since it is a pinned attached front sight it is highly unlikely that that has been knocked off place.

Their recommendation was change the gas rings.

...we'll see.

Really dirty springs can be so clogged they won't compress as far as they used to. The force doesn't really change, but the amount of travel can.

Dave

Dave- what springs do you mean?  Buttstock spring?

I'm confused:

I thought you isolated out the bolt/bolt carrier group already (runs fine in the bushmaster).
I thought you isolated out the complete armalite lower (runs fine with the bushmaster upper).

That should eliminate out all springs, no?  (Vital springs existing in lower and in BCG, foregrip is not an issue I would expect)

So, W, do I get it right that if you use the Bushmaster complete lower, the Bushmaster bolt and bolt carrier group and the Armalite upper - then you have failures?

If so then we are at the upper.  If it is fewer failures than with the Armalite BCG then you might have a pair of failures with one being springs but not exclusive.

Yes Techres, that summary you posted above was correct.

There were a couple failures with the armalite bolt in the bushmaster upper.

So I replaced the gas rings... tried it. No avail.
using remmington umc 55. failure 70% of time.

Found some federal green tip 62 grn.

No failures.  bolt even held back.

Found some lake city 55grn xm193

again No failures. bolt held back

Sorry for the goose chase everyone.  And thanks for the brainpower.

With my rifle at least, commercial ammo is not going to cut it.

Most excellent!

Underpowered ammo.  Better to know now then the day you need it for "realsies no dealsies".

I just meant springs in general, not any particular spring in your rifle. An AR would have to be pretty badly mistreated to have a spring be that dirty. But some of my wife's gardening tools used to get clogged pretty regularly.

Sorry I wasn't being very helpful.
