.308 diameter bullets out of a Mosin?  What kind of groups are you getting?

I cant really comment on the group size for all of these but I can ring the gong (8" steel) at 100 yds. without trouble, I just never measured it.  Concerning the bullet diameter, my Mosen-Nagant 91/30 slugs out at exactly .312 so .308 bullets wouldn't be a first choice.  Normally I use the following
-   Hornady 150gr. Spire Point (.312)
-   Hornady 174gr. FMJBT (.3105)
-   Sierra 174gr. HPBT MK (.311)

The Nosler's were something that a friend of mine had siting around and wanted to get rid of, so we loaded them and shot them up.  I have not tried any .308 bullets in my rifle and I have modified my dies to include the Redding .303 expander. I don't know why the die manufacturers (Lee, Redding...) produce them with the .30 cal. expanders.  I believe that most folks shooting 7.62x54R are using the proper sized .311-.312 bullets for the 7.7 Jap and the .303 British.  I believe the only M-N's barreled for .308 were Finnish? Anyway they are far outstripped by the .310 to .315 bore M-N 91/30's and others in that caliber.

Hope that helps

Cheers,

Shot this one this past weekend and it was nice to shoot.  Not too much sharp recoil out of a 91/30.

Owning a chainsaw doesn't make you a logger.  Put some wood on the truck and keep all your fingers and toes at the end of the day, then I'll be impressed.  Likewise with rifles.

Sometimes 308 diameter bullets are the right diameter for a Mosin. I've got 3 Mosins. The M24 Finn has a SIG barrel, .309" bore. The M28 isn't much different. The 91/30, well, we know is at least .310". Got a PSL that like 308 diameter bullets too.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.
