a "Bess" has no sights. Trying to use the bayonet lug as a front sight usually results in hitting low.

historical references to "volley fire" are just that. Lines of soldiers firing their weapons in the general direction of the enemy soldiers.

also note the objection of the Regulars to the targeting of officers. (that the colonials were actually aiming for them)

sighting down the side of the barrel, similar to sighting down an arrow in archery, works well with a little practice.

mtmisfit -- yes, thanks, I know there aren't any sights.  I think there needs to be a little emoticon for <sarcasm>.

I do like the suggestion to sight down the side of the barrel rather than the top of it.  Makes sense.

Interestingly, I was reading about using dry-fire to remove flinching. Starting with no powder, then increasing primer loads until the flinch is gone, followed by increasing charges in the barrel. Sounds like a plan.

I suppose this is as good a thread as any to announce that early next week Michigan will have another Brown Bess in the family. I pulled the trigger and bought one from Dixie Gun Works today. The expected delivery date is  Monday or Tuesday.  ^:)^ ^:)^

The only thing I lack to going operational is a mold. I may need to borrow your mold this weekend Steel. Or get some of your lead balls.

Ironically, from a standing position and no sling I'm more accurate shooting Steel's Brown Bess than I am shooting with my tricked out 10/22s from prone. :wb:

Roundballer

Congratulations on the new Besses.  I know I have enjoyed mine for the last 25 yrs or so.

Here is a "house warming gift" for the new besses.

I cut them from "cutrite" wax paper and roll them around a piece of 3/4" dowel over a heat gun to seal them into tubes.

I have a sketch of the block for a cartridge box some where.  I'll see if I can find it, I'll post it if I can.

SteelThunder

Thanks roundballer.  I was just making up paper cartridges out of newspaper last night.  This is helpful.

Dixie Gun Works is on the ball, the baby was just delivered.

Can't shoot it until tomorrow but I will be doing a nice fondle/wipe/Ballistol lube tonight.
