In preparing for the Appleseed next weekend my wife and I have been doing a fair amount of shooting with our Ruger 10/22 Liberty Training Rifles.  Today we discovered that our factory magazines would no longer reliably feed.   When shooting you could hear the magazine advance a round a second or more after a shot was fired.

Online research indicated that the magazines were probably full of so much bullet lube/wax that proper rotation of the rounds in the magazine was becoming impossible.

I located this tutorial and used it to solve my problem:  http://www.heypete.com/pete/shooting/rugermag.html

During the cleaning process I found a thick rim of bullet wax that needed to be scraped off the walls of the magazine.

I've heard that the mags never need maintenance (don't believe it, FWIW) and they need cleaning once every 10 years (I'm closer to that).

Best thing I've heard for short-notice (ie: on the firing line and the mags start sticking) cleaning is to soak them down with brake or carb cleaner, give it a couple of minutes to dry out (easier if you have compressed air), then pour it full of trans fluid and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.

Drain the trans fluid, blow it out with compressed air (if avail, of course) or shake the bejeezus out of it to get as much out as possible, then load and go.

Thing with trans fluid instead of regular oil is that trans fluid has many more detergents and is designed to stand up to MUCH longer abuse than most oils, and it sticks to the internals better.

Of course, YMMV, but this seems to be a good Q&D route to go.

I you have an allen wrench you could clean one faster than spraying, dribbling, and blowing. If you leave you mag damp with tranny fluid it's going to attract all kinds of grit.

I've placed a 9/64" Allen wrench in my range bag in case we need to clean out a 10/22 mag, and a 5/64" Allen wrench in there in case we've got some loose Tech Sights. AND a tube of Loctite.

As long as we're hijacking this thread.....COME ON 40!!!!!!

JB, it was funny the first 10 or 20 times. The first time you did it, you were a wit. The second time makes you a half-wit, and it gets worse from there. Enough. Why don't you just stop reading the thread if you don't like it?

Who said I didn't like this thread????   As a matter of fact I LOVE this thread! I check it daily for important and relevant information I can use.     10 or 20 times I've done that???  Man, I've told you a million times, don't exagerate!  I understand your personal opinion of me is pretty low, but a PM would have been a better way to let me know.   Kicking others in the crotch in public is not nice.

That's OK, JB, he was known as the Spelling Nazi at the NortheastShooters forum.

Just 41 pages?

The LTR thread in northeastshooters is up to 36 pages...

Plus the rimfire.com pages on the mods...

It's getting a bit disorganized and hard to find information on the 10/22 LTR.

I'm thinking I need to buy a different kind of rifle just so I don't have to sort through so many threads...

I bid on a 1927 stevens .22lr single shot - still quicker than a musket, but less to know about than a 10/22.

Think of all the time I'll save preping mags!

For anybody interestd with my post on pg 40... I solved the problem I've been having with my mags not dropping by HEAVILY sanding the sidewalls of the stock with a dremel.  It took a lot more work than it should of and I'm pretty disappointed with Hogue for shipping me a fairly expensive stock in this state.  But,  nonetheless things are working smoothly now and I got an excuse to tinker out of it...no harm no foul.   :~

Please recommend a scope for this rifle (10/22).  I've got a .920 bull barrel so tech sights are out ( I know they just released an adapter but the barrel's threaded, so thats a no go). Ideas?

Several options...you could have a gunsmith/machinist dovetail the heavy barrel and install Tech-Sights if you wanted to go that route.  If you're set on getting glass, I'd recommend not 'overpowering' the rifle.  Tailor the equipment to the mission; if its going to primarily be an LTR, you're kinda hurting because most scopes are set for a 50+yd parallax.  I'd recommend going the T-S option.

As far as glass goes, the sky is the limit.  I've had VERY good luck with Bushnell Banner scopes and have a 1.5-4.5x32 that has been on and off many rifles, and is excellent.  They are typically in the $70-$130 range, depending on power & objective.  If you're looking in the $200 range, Leupold comes to mind.  Only thing is, the parallax is locked in at 60yds on all of their rimfire scopes except the VX-II 3-9x33 EFR, and it bumps you up to around 400 bones.  Look around, but don't, under any circumstances, over scope it.  You'll see too much of the target and your scores will go down on the AQT.  The first time I fired my LTR w/ Tech-Sights, I scored a 227.  I made Rifleman with a scoped 10/22 (VQ'd out...THM Tension barrel, scope mount, hammer, etc.) and a score of 219.  At the RBC 8-0-8, I used the same rifle most of the week, but switched to my LTR to wring it out.  I fussed the shot MUCH less and the scores went up.  Dunno, but there's something to using aperture sights instead of a scope for our purposes.

Anyway, theres my 3 pennies.

Thanks for the advice.  Honestly, I hadn't thought about getting the barrel dovetailed.  I'm going to look into that.

The last of my parts conveniently arrived Saturday, while I was 5 hours away at the Allemans PA shoot.  Thank you, Midwayusa.com for your excelent timing!  $$-0

With had the same issue with aFajen.  I hit the inside of the stock lightly with a file and they still didn't drop free.  I took the file to the mags, again, lightly 10-12 strokes, and the mags now drop free and clear with ease.

Had sim issues with the Tapco Fusion stock, the tech sights and two Butler Creek mags - all had to be "modified" to function, but hey - what fun would it b if it all worked out of the box - where's the challenge in that?

Glad to be a member.  Strongly considering trying to get off of work for the Van Etten shoot Memorial Day weekend.

Possibly some photos of the LTR's in action tonight.

I ran into a problem--I ordered a VQ hammer and bolt release and when I went to install the hammer--it said to use the factory hammer bushings on the new hammer--I guess Ruger changed their factory hammer and the bushings are part of the hammer.  Any idea where I can get the bushings?

Midway also sells the bushings. They're cheap but not always in stock.

thanks eagle and capt G--I will order them tonight--wish I knew I had to get them before I ordered the hammer--oh well--live and learn

Have you torn it down and looked at the hammer? I have a new 10/22 and it has the same old bushings as the 20 year old version.  They pop right into the Volquartzen hammer. You're not saying bushings and thinking shims are you?  Shims are definately after market items and not necessary.  Hope this helps, JB
