where do you attach the sling swivels on a rifle that doesn't have any?  my oldest boy chose the stainless with plastic? stock model.  and my youngest got the crr model with the wood stock?  i did order the correct swivels, i'm just not sure what to do with them.

Unless yours are different than mine, just grab the swivel and unscrew the whole thing. They are one- piece, rather than a separate stud and swivel.
This makes replacement easy though. No drilling. Just screw the studs in the holes left by the originals, attach your swivels, done.

edit: Success!!  Now just a trip to WallyWorld for some Loc-Tite, and I'm in business.

In the past I have unscrewed the thing, removed the wire loop, drilled the hole all the way through to the requesit size and reinstalled it. Didn't even buy studs!  JB

Hi guys. Jason here in Peoria AZ.

Ran across this site some time back. Read a large number of posts and went ahead and signed up. Bought a new 10/22 carbine and most of the stuff listed in this post: http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=32.msg6061#msg6061 including the Tech-sights. Decide to get the Tech-sights installed first. Well... big problem.

I cannot for the life of me get the front sight out.

I tapped the sight from left to right .. no joy.

I tapped a bit harder.. no joy.

I tapped even harder (OK, I hit it  ???).. still no joy.

Not wanting to do an injury to the weapon, I stopped and called for help.... HELP!

I'm using a 5/32 pin punch and a 22oz ball-peen if that could make any difference. And the barrel is supported along it's entire length.

Do ya think it being new could have something to do with it?

BTW, will be signing up for the end of November AS at Ben Avery the end of the week. Looking forward to it.  :)

ann

I did it!!!!!!!

i installed the kit's from christies in both of my boy's rifles tonite.  the recoil buffer pin, the auto release, extended mag release and the jumbo cocking handle.  i went to some of the websites listed in this thread, printed the very good pictures and instructions and got to work.  everything went fine.  the only trouble i had was trying to install the mag release upside down.  duh. ::)

i will install the sling swivels tomorrow, cant find one of my drill bits (of course it's the one i need) and i gotta get some epoxy.

anyone who is nervous about trying to install this stuff, don't be.  if i can do it, anyone can.

Sorry, bud, you're gonna hafta hit it harder or get a bigger hammer.
"Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by a race of slaves.  Sad alternative!  But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" - George Washington - from a letter to a close friend after the events of April 19, 1775

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our (the United States) overthrow.  Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter.  From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger.  I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

I had to really pound on one of my front sights.  Try finding a way to squeeze some oil wherever you can to see if that will help.

squirt some kroil on there and let it soak in for 5 or 10 min.

that stuff works wonders. the front sight should pop right out.

I have read here that the Ruger factory original extractor is often to blame for failures to extract.  Six different brands of ammo all give the same dismal reliability with the Ruger extractor.  It's astonishing that a factory new rifle is sold with such a handicap.

Which companies make more reliable replacement extractors?
Anybody try stoning the factory extractor to enhance its grasp of the shell rim?

Mark Davis

My experience is that extractor problems are caused by grit in the spring/plunger reccess. A sometimes grit comes installed by the factory.

To answer the who sells a better extractor question:

I bought the Volquartsen Extractor from Midway USA $9.99

I can eliminate the grit possibility as a cause; I clean after every session by complete disassembly of the bolt, extractor, and spring/pin.  Plus, the extraction trouble begins with the first magazine.
Examining the Ruger extractor, I can see that half of the volume of the claw- which grips the case rim- has been removed thanks to enthusiastic radiusing by the part fabricator.  Of the theoretical maximum size of the extractor claw, it's operating on 50% of that thanks to the fabricator's belt sander/ edge breaker.
Now here's an extractor by Volquartsen, which depicts a sharp, continuous, un-radiused claw.

The Volq claw depicted offers twice the rim contact area compared to the Ruger part in my rifle.
I expect functional improvement with the Volq part, if the actual part looks like the image here.

Hey everyone, based on previous posts in this thread, I ordered a couple of these DPMS Rear Sight Windage Knobs since my LTRs will probably be passed around a lot and it would be nice to easily zero for different shooters.

I can *guess* how I'm supposed to install one, but thought I'd ask before taking apart my TechSights 200. :)

Thanks.

problems w/ a 10/22 extractor?
WOW!
I'm not sure about all of u guys but that is virtually unheard of around my neck of the woods.
i know that they can get a little gritty after you put a few thousand rounds through them but mine have alwase kept spitting out brass.

I have owned 10/22s from nearly every change point in its life from the 60s to the present.  I have gotten examples which were used and abused and I have gotten several new ones within the past 5 years, pre and post plastic trigger housing.  I have yet to be let down by their performance in both reliability and accuracy.  I have found most issues and accounts of problems to have a root cause in the shooter and poor basic maintenance, not any inherent problem with the rifle.  New or used, I tear them down to the bare frame and clean lube & inspect every part.   I use Remington Golden HP bullets for plinking and Federal Auto Match for Appleseed shooting and hunting.  I don't see any significant change in POA/POI switching back and forth.      The Remington Golden bullets are a little less reliable than the Auto Match which are nearly 100% reliable  in feeding and function.
I will stick to these "terrible" "horrid" "junk" rifles....   ;D

i know what ur talking about when u say feeding problems.
mine gets AWESOME accuracy shooting a stinger HPSWC round.
the only problem is that they jam and/ or deform when you chamber them using a mag, because the reciever keeps smashing them into the lower part of the barrell just below the mouth of the chamber.

any suggestions / tricks to stop this. please post.

I have nearly 10,000 rounds through my LTR with nary a single FTE, all on the same original factory extractor. I can do B&D with it without having to buy dummies, try that in your 597!  ;)  The stock mag release and magazines are THE fastest reloads on the line, bar none. All the factory barrels I've seen have been much better than 4 moa, and that's all we require.  And all the other complaints seem to be just that, complaints. A rifleman persists, he doesn't wait for a perfect rifle to be designed.

I have to agree, all the problems I've seen on the line have to do with lack of cleaning. I've yet to see one choke due to mechanical problems that weren't associated with either cleaning or someone's ill fitted aftermarket parts.

What's the best poodley-pow thingie that can make me shoot Rifleman with my 10/22? I need one in titanium.

Junior Birdman

I got one in my range box. The Titanium model will cost you though.

I have just started putting my LTR together. I picked up the 10-22 a couple of weeks ago.

There are 33 pages of wisdom here. I wonder how long it will take me to read through it.

Dangit!  I wanted to start page 34!  Oh well, there's always page 35....or 36.....or 132,691

Congrats on starting page 34 Sav, you'll like having that LTR handy when you get to the shoots. Mine just made another Rifleman this past weekend. (I think that technically, I get 17% credit for this)

Hard to beat the feeling ya git when you loan someone a sighted in rifle that works flawlessly after they have struggled with one that isn't / doesn't.

They walk back from "speaking" with their target and have a huge grin on their mug.

You simply cannot buy that!

If it's the stuff I'm thinking of that federal would have been in a box of gold/white w/black trim and it dates from the early 60's not the 80's.  70's/80's would have been in a red box with white trim and blue accents.
either way old rimfire is bad news.

"Remember, theres no more important safety rule than to wear these, safety glasses"  Or something like that that Norm says.

I'm a woodworker and I've learned my lesson.  Always were safety glasses.  EVEN IF you think your regular glasses are 'good enough', they aren't.

I buy these 'fitovers' that go over my regular glasses that provide protection all the way around the eye, and not just in front of it.

They come in smoke, clear, and slightly mirrored (Good for shooting)....

Just my 2cents.

JB, consider this a bump.

I see even you cannot resist the pull of the LTR thread.  The LTR MoJo is strong......

BTW, you may have not gotten to 35, yet....., however, you did hit reply #666.......

V

OK, I'll bite... I'm not reading thru 35 pages...

I bought two LTR's carbines. After only a few months of use all of the black finish is peeling and bubbling inside the receiver.... I've scraped off the flaky stuff  and it doesn't seem to affect reliability it just looks c**p.

Is this normal? Should I get some paint stripper and remove it all to a nice shiny aluminium (as the Brits say) receiver...

Just asking...

Cheers
Phil
