Do you know your scope reticles?
DUPLEX // MILDOT // BALLISTIC // HORUS // TREMOR

How many of these have you seen on your lines?  Any additional ones?

I have seen most but the tremor. I would love to look through one at something other than a white sheet of paper. I suspect the usefulness of of the required ultra fine marking would be gone in low light, in patterned background, in low contrast settings, etc.

Just looking in to the woods with my fine mil-dots renders them near useless, unless you illuminate the reticle, but then your sight picture suffers.

My first choice is still a single pair of cross hairs, if using glass. First choice is really irons for as long as my eyes hold out.

A mil dot is a very useful tool, it allows you to do range estimation, as well as engage targets at mutiple distances quickly without making adjustments to your zero.

Wow, Horus and Tremor are quite the reticle.  Has anyone actually used one and can say if they actually work as well as the article says they do?  I think my eyes would get lost in those.

Can't say that I've looked through any students scopes, but pretty sure it is 99% duplex judging by the brand names.

My preference is the dot in a  circle style reticle. With the one I have I always have 1moa dot inside of a 10 moa circle which if I use half it gives me 5 moa. I can range anything I need to range with this set up and the math is simple.
I have Mil-dot reticles on my precision rifles but I do not like the math associated with them.  Yes I have a mil dot master too but. I can look through my dot and doughnut reticle and range a target doing the math in my head and never take my eye off the target. Yes I like simple stuff.

The Horis vision reticles are what some long range Army Snipers are now using. They are fantastic, although they take a few mins to get use to when you first pick one up, but after a few mins your eye moves past everything going on in the retical and focuses on the target. They are fantastic for quick engagements as well as quick follow up shots. They take a mil dot retical to the next evolution. They allow you to make holdovers for Windage and elevation quickly and with greater precision than holding out in space as you do with the traditional mil dot retical.

At a 25 meter AS, it seems to me that anything other than a fine crosshair would just get in the way of the target.  Maybe it's just me, but the KISS method almost always works best.  I only use a scope at all because my eyes are 68 years old.   Rodge

Knowing scope reticles is a huge part of IMC, I think; I've seen these and a few others on lines that I have worked.  I use a Vortex PST with TMCQ reticle in MOA's making it lighting fast on targets out to (at least) 400 yds.  I've seen several Vortex optics will their whole array of reticles, from EBR's to TMCQ's; I've also seen some Bushnell's with the B&C reticle.  AS is an iron-sight program, but it's good to know your scopes, too.

RODGE, for 25m, yeah, a duplex reticle or something like that is perfecty fine.  However, I wouldn't necessarily encourage putting those on a centerfire rifle, because I want a reticle that is easier to use for range estimation, come-ups/hold-overs, and wind doping.  My .02

I've seen tons of duplexes of course, and plenty of mil dots, but I haven't and wouldn't necessarily expect to see the real specialty long range precision type reticles like the Horus, since they aren't really suited to the type of shooting we teach.  You will see a lot of that type of stuff at sniper matches or long range precision classes.

I see 90% duplex reticles, 5% NC Star (or Cabelas or whatever) knock off mildot, BDC, "tactical" reticles, 4.99% red dots of some sort (be that EOTechs, Aimpoints, etc.) and then .01% of my personal favorite, the Russian/Romanian Dragunov/PSL style scopes.

Spoken like a true Rifleman.

For our purposes, a scope should be used to determine go/no-go and how much of a hold is necessary, if at all. All these gidgets and gadgets are awesome for snipers and big game hunters. We're neither. We need an "If it's bigger, shoot. If it's smaller, how much do I hold over?" and possibly a way to dope the wind. Other than that, we're splitting hairs and we don't split hairs. We split 4 MOA!

Instructors should know the practical applications of any scope we could encounter on the line. But to KISS, the main point of all scope instruction is simply range finding and holds.

I wonder if I can adapt a PSL scope to my 10/22. (grin)

Agreed, the mission is, among other things (e.g., awakening...") getting the largest number of fellow citizens into 4moa, but if we are talking about useful reticles for...uh...professionals, the patent liturature provides a richly detailed (free, online) resource,
