Monmouth F&G hosted the Appleseed Project this past weekend and what a weekend it was! Beautiful weather, a small but great group of shooters and a great facility made it a shoot to remember!

Weather: cool in the morning and warming up to the mid 70's by the afternoon, both days. Little humidity, a fair breeze and a covered firing line meant the shooters could bear down on the fundamentals and practice/apply what was taught by the Maine AS contingent.

The Shooters: All enthusiastic, ranging in age from 10 to 60 something, all eager to learn and take in both the instruction and our early American Heritage.
Equipment on the line varied from an SS break barrel, tube fed semi. bolt and lever rifles thru a Sig 522. There were some 10/22's in there also.

The Old Guide provided most of the instruction on Saturday and the first strike during lunch. By mid afternoon all of the shooting positions had been covered and the intro to the AQT was made. The 2nd strike was told mid afternoon and the day closed out with the 3rd strike of the match.
Sunday included a quick tune up on squares and a return to AQT's thru lunch. A KD class was held on the 100 yard range and the day finished up with AQT's and Redcoats.

The Range: Nicely kept. covered, somewhat shaded in the afternoon made the instruction, application and shooting go much better. The club provided lunch in the club house and accommodated everyone very well.

Bonus: We had a reinactor walk on for Saturday. Not only did he get some shooting in but he was coerced into giving the students his story on how things were and threatened to become if the colonists sustained their British rule. Jacob Broom, from Wilmington De, surveyor, businessman, legislator and 5th signer of the Constitution told the crew what was happening. the feelings of his fellow countryman and the almost impossible odds that were overcome in getting the delegates to sign before the legislators went home. Great stuff!

It seems good to get a day back home before writing up an AAR, you do remember a few small but good points that may have been missed otherwise.

Pictures will follow.

The Old Guide

"Jacob Broom", The reenactor was not sure he could come because they had family coming from Ohio. It turns out that his brother-in-law was already interested in Appleseed and he was delighted to be able to attend if only for one day.

We had two shooters from Virginia. The Sig shooter fired a Rifleman score. Then he borrowed a 10/22 LTR and fired back to back 225 and 226 Rifleman scores with the Tech Sighted Liberty Training Rifle. He loves the history. Virginia needs to recruit this guy. We'll send contact info to the Virginia SC.

Last, but by no means least was our youngest shooter. This 10 year old 4th grader followed instruction to the letter. On the second day he repeated back the four safety rules correctly. When positions and steady hold factors were demonstrated he got right into those positions during the instruction. He started out with a tiny Rossi break action single shot. The first Redcoat was not in much danger. On Sunday he got to use the 10/22 LTR.

On the second afternoon I presented him with the white oval Appleseed patch as the most improved shooter of the weekend. He had performed well, paid attention and asked thoughtful questions among a group of adults for two days. There was never a word of complaint. I like to think that young people like him are the future of our country. He will bring friends to his next Appleseed.

Monmouth is a great facility. They have ramps for handicap access and a great kitchen. There is limited camping on site. Tonight they have a board meeting. The club members who saw our event are going to ask that the club have Appleseed back on a regular basis.
Our history is not a list of dates and places. It is a dynamic adventure of freedom and individual courage.
