Hey guys,

I've noticed that at the Camp Perry rifle match shoots there is a vintage sniper rifle class. I am very interested in competing and am probably going to build a Mosin nagant for the occasion. Here's the problem, I know enough about the rifle to get myself into trouble. I want to get the most accurate base model available (looking at the model 91-30 exclusively) And i also plan on hand loading the caliber as well. i already have tree of these rifles and absolutley love them. Thanks for the info

FWIW, pre-war Tula's are the best made next to the Finnish ones.  Here's enough to get you in trouble http://7.62x54r.net/
Ignorance may be bliss, but it's not a virtue.

Caliper

A Finn M39 with the PE scope is also eligible for the vintage sniper competition.
With any of these old rifles, bore condition is just as important as how well it was made to begin with.  Still plenty of these with shiny bores.  You may pay a but more but if you are going to compete with it, that's money well spent.

The Finns are the best of the Mosins, hands down.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

At about $100,
I think the Nagant is the most fun you can have with your cloths on!
Not to mention JG sales sends the accessories with it and that Bayonet by itself is expensive!
It would actually be worth it to get one just for the Accessory package it comes with. ..:..

I put on a Mosin shoot at my local club.  2,3 and 600yds prone slow fire at a silhouette.  At the end of the day, I pitch Appleseed.  They now have proof they need it.

I know you limited it to  91-30, but I've got to recommend the Finns

model 28 or 28-30

model 39, 1.5 MOA  rifles when originally issued, can still be found w/ new barrels

model 28/76 w/ peep sights, available from J&G @ 699 , rats, looks  like they're out, other sites have them

J&G does carry Russian 91-30  ex-PU snipers at $120, bore quality is ????

for good info, try gunboards.com  see the collectors forum, ask there and you might find someone who will part w/ a 91-30 refurb that has a new barrel

they also have a WTS forum to peruse, many bargains have been found there
