Hello,

A chronograph was recommended for checking loads.  What one do you recommend?

Thank you,

Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery

I've got an Oehler 35P and am very pleased with it.  It works well until the very late afternoon when the sun is quite low on the horizon.  Then it "misses" seeing some of the bullets.  I understand that in marginal conditions, it's more likely to "see" bullets that are shot through the lower portions of the window, especially really small caliber bullets like the .17's.

It'll set you back more FRN's (List is now $575 for the whole shebang in a carrying case, It was somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 when I got mine about 2002, IIRC.) than the one-piece types, and is a LITTLE more work to set up, but with the proof channel and 4-foot spacing of the screens I have to believe it's more accurate than the smaller units.

Ity might be smarter to get one of the cheaper ones and see if it meets your needs.  If not, you should be able to sell it for pretty near what you paid for it, and then upgrade.

A chronograph is a "nice to have" item, certainly not essential.

Most all of them will do a decent job, none I know of to stay away from.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

+1 on the Oehler 35 and I can recommend the Competition Electronics "ProChrono",  see, e.g., http://www.midwayusa.com/product/852429/competition-electronics-prochrono-digital-chronograph.

I would stay away from the "Shooting Chrony" brand products, because the two I have worked with are not reliable and tend to "miss" the passing projectile (and measure nothing) much too often.

Of course, YMMV  :cool2:

Thank you,

With the girls starting to use air guns and starting to work up loades for the M1 after the Greek is gone I thought it would be a nice to have item.  I will ask around the clubs I belong to I may be able to barrow one at least a couple time to see if it is a need.

Thanks again,

2-Fat

I got the Shooting Chrony F1 from Midway for checking my handloads, and haven't had any problems with mine.  I use a camera tripod to mount it a measured 10 feet in front of the muzzle, and as long as it's fairly sunny outside, it seems to be pretty reliable.  It's only about $94.  http://www.midwayusa.com/product/531741/shooting-chrony-f1-chronograph
