Ramblin' Wreck

Today at 11 AM on the square in Trenton, Ga we will have our annual Veterans day event where we honor those who have served this country. As the former commander of the American Legion Post here I was asked if I would like to introduce my daughter Regan, a 12 year old blue hat Applecore volunteer. Of course I agreed.

Following is the text of the talk I will deliver. I have no idea what's up with the formatting if you can't read it.

I would love to read your talk, but, as you suspected, the formatting is mush.  Could you email it to me?  dplunkett@cox.net

Lets see how this comes out, I copy and pasted it into word and then cleaned it up a bit.

Proud of the post for doing this year after year.

We tend to think of Veterans of only being those we know. Those who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gulf War, Vietnam, Korea, WWII. Our first veterans who answered this country's call stepped up on April 19th 1775, 236 years ago. That was the day that Americans first declared that they would be free and claim their God-given liberty. In a moment, Regan is going to tell you a story about some of those first veterans who spontaneously answered the call to make this country free. Her story is about "Dangerous Old Men" who were considered too old to participate in the militia. Regan and I are both volunteers in the Appleseed Project, which is dedicated to teaching every American our shared heritage and history as well as traditional rifle marksmanship skills. Our volunteer instructors travel across the country teaching those who attend about the difficult choices, the heroic actions, and the sacrifices that the Founders made on behalf of modern Americans, all of whom are their progeny. Our marksmanship clinic teaches people of all ages basic rifle marksmanship skills. To qualify as an Appleseed instructor you have to shoot expert on the Army's qualification test, exhibit a willingness to spread the Appleseed message and teach people to shoot and be at least 13 years old. The reason Regan has a blue hat instead of an orange hat like mine is because she's done everything except have that 13th birthday. She will get her orange hat next March at the first Appleseed shoot after her birthday.

REGAN: Dangerous Old Men
There are those who feel that America's future is grim, that is, that America has lost something special and it can never be regained. Andin their consternation they mutter about "dark choices" and the like. Appleseed has a message for them. Just over two hundred years ago, our ancestors genuinely faced a tough choice. They could submit to those they felt were depriving them of their rights as Englishmen or they could fight. Because they chose as they did, we may never have to face their dilemma because we have a third alternative.  We are able to do something they could not do, we can vote.

We just had an election here in Trenton and only a total of 309 votes were cast. This is very disappointing.  Veterans have answered the call to make this country the freest on earth and give its' citizens the liberty to avoid having to ever again make the kind of choices those first Veterans had to make on April 19th1775. If you want to really honor the sacrifices our veterans have made for 236 years get out and help choose the people who determine the future of our country. You can't do that from the couch in front of the TV. You can't do it at a football game. You can't do it at a NASCAR race. You can only do it at the ballot box. Should our country ever again have need of "Dangerous Old Men" I hope to be one of them. I know I can count on seeing my band of brothers who have already sacrificed so much standing there with me.

Thanks Dryfire for fixing this. I wrestled with it till it almost made me late to the event. Regan did very well and if I can convert an iPhone video I'll post her recitation and my introduction here on the forum.

Here is a link to a bad iPhone video of the presentation at the Dade County Veterans Day ceremony. Recording this was an afterthought as we drove to the event. We'll do better on the next one. There were around 200 people present as Regan and I were speaking.

Ben -- my personal congratulations to both you and Regan.  Hope to get up to one of your shoots in the near future.  I'm assuming you've dried out since our first meeting at Manchester on Labor Day.

Last weekend at the Tuscaloosa AS, both 4merUSMC1803 and I had a few chuckles over the memory.

See ya.

Ben,

This is perfect.  Thanks for putting it together.  And thanks to Ms. Reagan for a great delivery.
