Ok --To improve the sights on a Saiga 7.62x39 AK (it's got a Tapco telescoping stock) , I went ahead and got an m3 Primary Arms red dot (I tried a friends and loved it!)

I have a side mount (the extra low one.  You can fit maybe a Popsicle stick between the dust cover and the bottom of the rail.  I added the PA red dot (it has an extra low mounting ring) and while I can see the red dot - I'm going to need more than a turkey neck!  (not quite a giraffe..more like a horse neck)

I can maybe get away with using a 'chin weld' but it just doesn't feel right especially when prone.

I know some folks put some padding on the buttstock but this AR type stock isn't conducive to putting padding/tape.  Anyone have a similar set up and what else can be done?

On my wife's Saiga .223, we added a riser and a neoprene sleeve with a foam insert.  It is on a standard stock though not the Tapco.  All told I think it is a rise of about 7/8ths of an inch.  It has made it a very comfortable shooter.  I hope you find a solution.

Seems to me somebody was making cheek pieces for the telescoping AR stocks.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

I found it:

This is a "cheek rest for t-6 stocks".

It's something like $twenty something bucks for 2.  I'm using the "taller" one here.  It's much more comfortable now and allows a good cheek weld.  I hope to take it to the range soon and see how it improves on the iron sights.  It snaps on to the stock and holds in place.

The whole set up has made the rifle MUCH heavier and because of that, I'm debating if it's worth it.   (the PA m3 Red Dot is NICE though)

I'm just waiting for someone to post that picture with the guy saying, "take that junk off that AK" or something like that.  :)

Why don't you take it to the Appleseed at Manchester this weekend? ;)
