As an extension of the bolt action LTR conversation I've been looking for an inexpensive boltgun.  Anyone with 1st hand experience with this one?

An older topic, but I'm looking for an answer to this as well. Has anyone seen/used this?

Yes I have one and it is areally accurate rifle. I love the trigger!
The downside however is with the extraction. Mine FTEs about 2 to 3 out of 50. I tried running it through my first AS and it was just plain frustrating. I the researched a few of the boards and it seems that mine was not an isolated case.
If you would like, the next time we are at a shoot together, I'll be happy to bring it along and let you try it. I intend sending the whole rifle back to Marlin after squirrel season ends next year. The bolt is actually matched and serial numbered to the action, thus shipping just the bolt or changing out the extractor is not an option according to Marlin.
Not sure this helps, but, it is my experience.
Thanks for all of your help along the way!

Not sure of the MSRP of the Marlin, but were I looking for a bolt gun LTR, I'd give serious consideration to the CZ's...

Thanks BeSwift. I am very familiar with CZ and their outstanding quality. Um MRSP at the low end is $190, to $350 when you get into speacialized stocks, BBs, and Stainless.

A couple questions about the extraction GEmanual. I'm assuming it was well lubricated, did you just put 1 type of ammo through it or did you vary the ammo type? Was the point part of the extractor rounded off or anything? Is it s design flaw? What are your opinions about the cause/solution of the extraction problem? The possibilitys I see are:

(1) The round casing itself is expanding or just a little too big for the chamber, or it isn't properly lubricated and the casing is getting stuck

(2) The extractor isn't making it to the rim to extract it

(3) The extractor is slipping off of the casing once it is in proper placement.

Any thoughts?

Disclaimer - I work for an un-named large gun manufacturer so I may be biased.:cool2:

I own one and love it.  Shot Rifleman with it and backed it right up.  Best out-of-the-box trigger I've ever owned.  Only issue I've had with it through 2 Appleseeds was 2 or 3 FTFs which I believe to be ammo related.

10 shot mags from a Marlin 795 fit the XT series also, making the 1st & 4th AQT stages easier.  Standard mag is a 4 or 7.

If you return the rifle it will go to Arms Service in Ilion NY, not actually to the factory in Mayfield KY where those are produced.

FTExtract on an XT is likely to be a tight chamber IMHO.

Chuck,

Stock Iron sights or scoped?

How are the stock sights?

I shoot scoped due to bad eyes and advancing age.

I'm not impressed with the stock sights on the basic model.  Stamped leaf rear, drifted into a dove tail. Adjustment involves a hammer.  Front sight also pretty basic, not high vis.  Sights were built to a price point.  Easy enought to upgrade though.

I love my Mossberg 801 plinkster Half pint.

It was $130 with a 4X factory scope that has done very well despite my initial misgivings about the scope.  The trigger is very nice.  I bought it initially for my 10 yo daughter.  I added 2 inches to it to make it fit me and added a sling.  I have shot a 229 in nice weather and a 223 at winterseed with it.  Very hard hitting firing pin so it eats Remington Bulk ammo that constantly misfires in the 10/22. 10 round magazines are $12.  The 802 is a full size version of this rifle and is also around $130.

The downside it cocks on lifting the bolt so it is heavy for younger shooters, it is made in Brazil and it CANNOT be dryfired.

You say the Mossberg 801 cannot be dry fired?  I think every manufacturer advises against it (legal department clap trap), but no harm is done to the rifles.  Is the Mossie different?

Charles McKinley

The way it crushes the rim on the shells and being told not to do it by the tech rep I think it may scar the face of the bore (probably not correct term) where the pin would hit.  Dry firing the Remington 597 will damage the rifle according to EZ3 after damaging his rifle.

As well as it shoots I just shoot it.  I put about 400 rounds through it before my first AS with it and scored a 217 and a 229 my personal best with it at that shoot.
