I have a stock AR CMMG .223 with a 17" barrel.  Basically a short range battle rifle.  What are my chances of of shooting Rifleman scores with this gun?  ???  I'm afraid I may have the wrong tool to accomplish the high marks.

Not at all, that tool should work just fine.

Suggestion, get a thinner front sight.   .034" or the Match front sight.  Your current front sight is in the ball park of 16 to 20 moa wide, that makes the job of shooting sub 4 moa more difficult :o

Other than that, you should be fine.  Slinging up, unless it is an A1, pencil barrel, should not be an issue.  Seen many ARs, 16" barreled ones, shoot Rifleman scores...

While there whole 223 vs. 308 debate for a Rifleman is a different thread, they are both capable of sub 4 moa shooting, if the nut behind the butt plate is doing it's job ;)

A pertient tidbit of trivia info you need to know:

The US Army fielded the M4 and then the M4A1 Carbines starting around 1990.

Over the years, we've learned the M4A1 has actually produced slighty higher scores than the M16A2 (sometimes) on weapons qualification.

So, we are in the process of replacing the M16A2's with M4A1's for most units.

That should tell you your shorty AR WILL get the job done, if you do your part.

Remember, it's the Man that makes the Rifleman, not the Rifle.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

I ordered the .034" front sight last night before going to bed, and then ended up dreaming about it. Weird  :P  :D

Guess I should get myself an A2 front sight tool now to install it.  :o
