Rain was forecast for this weekend, and we were anticipating a wet shoot... and it had rained the night before.  

We arrived at the range about 7:30 to find a fairly dry range to set up on. Then the sun broke out and stayed with us all day. During lunch the instructors all commented on how beautiful the day was... We started out Saturday with 9 pre regged, with 4 no shows and two walk ons. So 7 to the line. We had a great start after some equipment issues to deal with.

We also had a special group visiting to film the Appleseed here at Piru.  www.ATSN.tv  (American Trigger Sports Network) came both days.... They were welcomed with open arms, and our California State coordinator, Bob Zio was on hand to liason with them to allow the rest of us to attend to business. Safety briefing, then on with the instruction!!!  

We had some good history presentations, and did some Musket shooting during the history.  :~

We ended the day with 5 of the 7 shooters making the 250 yd head shot and 2 shooters Cleared the redcoat.  Previous Appleseeder, Patrick Ross had a high 205, with first timer, Gavin ended the day with a 172. Gavin's wife, Colleen, was improving but had some rifle troubles with a tube fed lever action she had. No riflemen today... :'(

Sunday showed 4 returnees, and 3 more walk ons, for a total of 7. Weather was much cooler, with dark clouds looming. (We are so spoiled her in CAL). A quick refresher on squares, then on to the AQT's. Patrick Ross, shot his rifleman score on the 3rd AQT with a 217... CONGRATS PATRICK!!!   :--- :--- :---

About 2 pm, the clouds unloaded on us, and we scrambled to put up the covers over the line... with everyone helping, it only took about 10 minutes. We wiped down the rifles and back at it just like nothing ever happened... Remember, a rifleman persists..

We ended the day with high scores of: Andrew=165, Herve=187, Glenn=192, Brian C=205, and Patrick made Rifleman with 217.

Excellent improvement throughout the day...Way to go all!! The instructors were excellent, as usual, and we had a great time with ATSN there filming. They felt like old friends and were a pleasure to be around. We even put the Producer, Rose Marie, on the line with an LTR... Unfortunately, she had missed the instruction part as she had a crew to supervise... Bob told them to come back when they could go through the instruction with no distractions, which they accepted...

Anyway, I have some photos to reduce the size on for posting, and want to leave some details for the other instructors to fill in...

We also had a few shoot boss hats given out. Congrats to Dano for shoot bossing Piru last month..

And congrats to Jacques for shoot bossing Santa Barbara. That is his home range, and his daughter Jessica made rifleman and stepped into her Orange hat as an instructor...

so we have another father, daughter team!!! Glad to have you aboard, Jessica!!

For those who missed it, you missed a glorious weekend...   8)


We had a magnificent bunch of shooters.  They just soaked up the instruction -- steady hold factors, six steps, everything.  Way faster than I learned it, anyway!  It showed on the targets, too.  Sights were quickly zeroed and groups steadily shrank.

Believe it or not, on one AQT, if Ross had shot 2 2 3 3 instead of 3 3 2 2, he'd have gotten a 230!  All with a basic 10/22 LTR.    There's no denying that talent.

Sespe was there in full costume, and so was his wife, who braved the mud to give us a stirring account of Jemima Warner's sacrifices for Liberty.

Our intrepid shoot boss startled us all with his spirited and highly terrifying bayonet charge...  It's even scarier to see than it sounds!

Good to meet Jacques and DanO and Cal7.62 and all the rest.  Also thanks to ATSN for coming out and filming to help us get the word out.  The sun was shining for 95% of it, the rounds were hitting their targets, the hills were beautiful and green, the gentle songs of cows hung gently in the air...  can't beat a weekend like that.

And it looks like Bob210's AR even got some dust on it.....like he's getting to use it more often! O0 :cool2: :---

It'll be fun to see the ATSN's program, gotta stay tuned for that..... O0 ..:..

Yep, I really need to clean that rifle......but it still shot a 222 on the QDAQT! ^:)^

And that was without the 30 cal rule. I think the 223 score would be easier to remember. Shot a 223 with a .223

Yeppers....dust on the gun is good....means it's getting out & gettin' used....and for -any- Instructor, that means valuable trigger time..... O0 O0

we've got a couple of folks out here going for a RM score with M1 carbines......

Cam, weren't you gonna run a 40 minute AQT with your Brown Bess sometime? That'll have you tuning your flints!! **) **) **)

Too much fun guys.....and all green up there in Piru.....that's a good thing!

Bob's AR is so dirty it wouldn't close on bolt release without the assist.   $$-0  Stoner would weep!

I was tempted to field strip and clean it right there on the line.  (Should be plenty of time in a two-minute prep, right?)  Next time I think I will...

     Did you guys have any missing black silhouettes on your targets?

     Was it possible one was missing, and you didn't think it important enough to mention?

     Or could it be one of those "ghost" images no one sees until the photograph is printed?

     Meaning it's not humans who "haunt" the Piru range - but silhouettes of targets shot long past... :)

     I ask, because in that very first picture, if you look up on the skyline, it sure looks like a stray AQT silhouette is taking one last look down on the range before heading for parts unknown, and freedom from the fear of getting shot at... :)

     Yep, LLP, Piru does look good in green.

     The promo report 20 minutes into the show on ATSN was great!

Way to go Dano! You made the cut without the interview.  Sorry I didn't stay to help clean up the weather had me a bit concerned.  Thanks for the great day.  I will be back to post a score worthy of a Rifleman.

Too true!! ^-^ Last month in Fla., even Mas Ayoob had a self-described "dyslexic moment" on that one, and got a 216 rather than a 230+.....good, but not good enough for him....he knew he could do better, and also rightly pointed out it was his lack of concentration on it that caused THE problem there....(I love it when someone takes personal responsibility!) O0 :bow: O0

Hey, when Ross shot Bob's AR, even with the dirty bolt, and having never shot one before, he actually did pretty well. It is things like this that show that this training applies to ANY rifle. It is also things like when an instructor gets on the line to shoot an AQT, just for fun, is 2-steps behind everyone else, but manages to throw on a sling, get a mag prep'd, start late and run through it and score a honest 222 right off the bat, that makes people look twice at what we are teaching.

I didn't go the second day but that's great to hear that you got your shoot boss hat too dano!  O0  Also happy to hear everybody continually improved their rifleman skills.  It was nice working with all of you even if it was only for one day.  Can't wait to participate in a WHOLE shoot next time! Look forward to instructing with all of you again in the future.  Also thank you all who contributed very useful advice.  I do listen to it and it helps out A LOT to get second opinions :)
