Catch-10-22

Another fantastic Rimfire Known Distance (RKD) shoot at the Associated Gun Clubs 200-yard range, sponsored by the Arlington Rifle & Pistol Club - we can't thank both clubs enough for allowing us to host 200-yard events in this part of Maryland. We were concerned that this shoot would be cancelled but we had shooters from Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania sign-up to fill the line.

The days leading up to the event were very rainy and the next few days will be as well. But for the day of the event the rain stopped just before we arrived and held off till after dinner. The ground was wet and the temperatures were cool but our shooters persisted and embraced the conditions to give it their all.

After intros and safety, we did the cold bore Morgan's Shingle at 125 yards with no instruction. The Shingle proved elusive and it set the stage for a lot of learning. We started by establishing zeros with 50-yard squares, IMC, and reset some turrets to zero. We then jumped into the trajectory lesson and tested whether scopes had sufficient elevation, accurate tracking, or a reticle sufficient to engage targets at 100, 150, and 200 yards. With practice targets posted, the firing line began moving back 50-yards at a time to test and collect DOPE. After establishing DOPE at 200 yards, we broke for lunch.

During lunch, Catch-10-22 and Yates tagged teamed A Tale of Two Marksmen and the Battle of Cowpens (which dovetail very well) covering history that started with the Beeline March and ended with the British defeat at Yorktown. Yates brought out a reproduction Brown Bess and original Pennsylvania Rifle which helped our students (and instructors) understand the challenge of Colonial and British marksman.

We then started our first AQT from 200 down to 50 with PA Instructor Henry scoring a 45/50 to requalify - Huzzah! The second AQT had some hiccups for all participants, but on the third AQT PA Instructor Aaron scored a 43/50 to requalify. We took a break at the 200 yard line for some additional KD instruction provided by Lycos. While some shooters dropped out at that point, we had two participants in the very high 30s who wanted one more chance. So we ran a very rare 4th RKD AQT and BOTH shooters qualified this time: Katie with a 42/50 and Nick with a 41/50. Congrats to both.

Father-Daughter team Larry and Allison topped out in the 30s but were dogged by a couple of stages throughout the day. However, Allison, a prior Riflewoman, showed great persistence throughout the day despite some equipment issues. In the end, she asked to take an Orange Hat - Huzzah!

The success of this event was based (in addition to the persistence of our students) on the very active coaching of a great group of Maryland and border-raiding PA instructors. Our shooters received a lot of personal coaching on the mats, some great history, and the instructors enjoyed learning from each other. My special thanks to Bookman, Off_Paper, Phoebe, Lycos, Yates, and The Analog Kid for working the event (and doing a little shooting too).

We can be sneaky with the photos  :cool2:

Glad you got so much out of it and definitely look forward to having you at a future event! A centerfire KD would add even more...  :snipersmi
