Colt CBA-16H Accuracy

I did some accuracy testing with my (soon to be) KD rifle. It's a Colt Competition Rifles CBA-16H, sold by Cabela's. It has a 16", non-chrome lined, HBAR barrel with a 1:8 twist. I had four different brands of ammo, with three bullet weights ranging from 55 to 77 grains. I shot five groups of 5 with each load. The format may appear somewhat confusing, so I'll explain. I had two AQT targets mounted side-by-side and I just shot from left to right, top to bottom, across both targets. The results are below:

The scope is a Primary Arms FFP 4-14x44 with the MilDot reticle. I am not sure if I like the FFP thing yet; those cross hairs get pretty thick at 14 power. I will say, however, that I had it sighted in for 25 yards with XM193 last week and, last night, I plugged the data into a ballistic calculator, made the adjustments as recommended, and it was pretty darn close to right on at 100. Also, the glass is plenty clear, it has side focus, and removable turrets for setting zero. The view at 100yds with it set to 14 power is shown below:

I shot this rifle at a 25 yard Appleseed over the weekend and thought an update might be in order. I was using XM193 this weekend. The rifle had previously been zeroed at 25 yards for this ammo and the turrets were set to zero. However, I subsequently adjusted my elevation for 100 yards. When I returned it to zero, I turned the knob the wrong direction and, as a result, the first shot on the first Redcoat was WAY low. I was able to see this through the scope and I immediately readjusted and, after that, did not miss another shot on that target.

The rifle and I were shooting consistently tight groups all day and I eventually scored rifleman twice towards the end of the day. I also managed to clear my first Redcoat:

I had promised Jonathan that, if he qualified rifleman with my RAR, he'd get to shoot the AR on Sunday. He did shoot rifleman, so he started Sunday off with this rifle. It made it through the first stage of the first AQT, at which point it stopped cycling altogether. We switched back, and it was doing the same thing for me. The line boss gave me an extended prep period to pull the bolt, and nothing appeared amiss. So, the rifle was retired.

We had cleaned the rifle Saturday evening, but we never took the handguard off. Upon returning home, I stripped it down, including the handguard, and found that the gas block screws were both loose and the gas block had walked about a quarter inch down the barrel. Voila, instant bolt action. The screws did appear to have red Loctite applied, so how they came loose, I have no idea. Anyway, I put the block back in place and tightened down the bolts after applying some blue Loctite. I still have to take it out and shoot it to verify that the holes are lined up. Hopefully it will be good-to-go in time for the KD in June.

You also need to stake the gas block screws.
My guess on how they came loose with red locktite is that that part get pretty hot. The way to get fasteners loose after using red locktite is to heat them and I guess the locktite "melts". Just throwing tennis balls at the wall.

Thanks for the heads-up. Unfortunately, this gas block is of the clamp on variety, so I don't think it can be staked (i.e., the screw heads are not recessed into the block). What you say makes perfect sence though, so I am guessing that my blue Loctite probably isn't going to be sufficient. It may be that I will really have stay on top of checking these after I shoot, unless there is a better way...

ST8,

I am having a brain malfunction, but your group sizes appear to be incorrect.  Did you shoot that target at 25 yards?

If so, 1 MOA at 25 yards is 1/4".

I think you have an error in what software you are using.

If it is 100 yards, real good shooting!

I guess I should have specified distance lol. Yes indeed, those groups were shot at 100 yards. That's why I was so "efficient" with my target usage. Folks tend to wanna throw 100 rounds into a single target at that range, so I made sure I had enough up there so I could get it done in one session, otherwise I'd have been there all day waiting on target changes.

I'd rather have that then the folks that shoot 1-3 rounds and spend 20 minutes downrange looking at their targets...  :shootself:

Nice shooting!
