This weekend was the Southwest Georgia Shooting Association (SWGASA) inaugural event.  Greg Clark, as one of the range owners, was diligent in getting Appleseed hosted, and it paid off!  Five pre-regs sprouted in the South Georgia morning rain to fourteen enthusiastic students eager to hear their history and improve their marksmanship.

Ken Tomblin, as the exemplary history presenter and Shoot Boss, and his impeccable instructor/spouse, Lori, helped coach this red hat named Goose through his first SBIT.  Like driving instructors with an unpredictable teenager who could steer for the curbing unexpectedly, they nurtured my running of the line, attempted to keep me on time, and in general were as kind and gentle as anyone could ask for in not flogging me senseless.  Ken and Lori...two people I would have never met were it not for Fred.

The students were simply outstanding, and only one young man had attended an event prior.  Wonderful people who gave me the impression that they, too, know the great ship is sinking and that something must be done.  I hope we sparked a few to come back and bring a friend or two.  Three brothers and two brothers, two fathers and their daughters, grandfather and grandson, range members and our invigorated host Greg.

On Saturday by 0930 the rain was letting up, and we dispersed to clear the pistol range of steel and obstacles.  By 1000 it was overcast and no rain and we were underway.  The afternoon was clearing and some sun to finish breezy and pleasant.

Sunday's start was crisp in the 40's with blue skies!  We had 8 students return to a spectacular day that warmed to the mid 70's.

No Rifleman patches were awarded, but great improvement witnessed in Red Coats, squares and AQT's.  It was impressive to see Stage One of all the students certainly within the 3's and many solidly in the 4's and 5's.  The superb instruction from Ken and Lori should benefit any who persevere.

Ken has a history repertoire that is vast and delivered with many styles to entertain, enlighten and encourage his listeners to pick up the torch of Liberty.  Lori gave Simplicity and Precision grace and professionalism.

It was an honor to have been a part of such a wonderful weekend on a new range.

Huzzah indeed!

Sorry I couldn't be there for this one. Sounds like it went off without a hitch, as I knew it would. Good on you Goose for stepping up!

I previously wrote Goose before I met him that a big difference between an Instructor and a Shoot Boss was a truck to haul all the stuff. When I arrived at Baconton and met for the first time Goose had a truck alright but he was pulling a trailer full of his Appleseed accoutrements!  ;D

The advantages of keeping things dry was immeasurable...nice to have the space, too!   O0

Greg sent a note today and said that he was still on the "high" from the weekend--sounds like we did our job, and well, too.

Looking forward to Patriot's Day!

Sounds like an auspicious beginning to Appleseed in south Georgia. Many thanks to Engineer Shooting and Lucky Lori for coming up from Florida to lend us a hand. And congratulations to Goose on his first SBIT. By the way, it is not necessary, but it certainly a big help indeed to have a truck or some other way to bring all the "gack" to an Appleseed event. And commendations to our gallant students for braving the rain and coming out to learn about our heritage and the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship. Huzza, all!

I had mentioned to Goose as well as every other SBit that the first qualification we look at to determine if you're a suitable SB candidate is whether you own a truck or not. In Jim's case a truck AND a trailer.  ;D

Way to go guys.

I want to thank Ken, Lori, and Goose for a great event!  This was my Grandson's second Appleseed, as we did Dublin together 2 years ago.  Ken's storytelling is engaging and Lori was a whirlwind assisting the shooters, and Goose can run like the wind.  Hopefully my disc problems will be cleared up for the May event.  Thanks again to The Appleseed Project!

Hope to see both of you on the line in May, it was pure pleasure for me to meet so many Georgia patriots! O0 O0

What a great weekend!  Lori, Ken, and Goose- you were wonderful.  Thank you for your time, patience and especially the lesson of our history.  Well done!!  Well worth coming from Texas to attend with my brothers!
