Hey Guys and Gals,
Has anyone been successful or given any thought into trying to adapt or find alternative mags for the ruger scout rifle in 556.
The only ones ruger sells are $75 10 round metal. The .308 version has polymer mags all the way down to almost flush fitting.
I Know the 556 metal mags just use .308 mags with inserts to size them down. I would think we could take a polymer 3 or 5 round .308 mag
and find a insert for it?

Anyone have any thoughts?

...wait, what?

$75 for a 10rd magazine??

Is Ruger trying to make the Steyr seem reasonable?

Because these are Accuracy International (AICS) style magazines, there is no cheap alternative at this time.

The polymer mags are only $39.95 Still over priced but not as bad , But they only make them for the .308.
I'm guessing they need to sell more 5.56 rifles before they think its worth it to make a run of poly mags.
Maybe Magpul could step up and make a few thousand. I wouldn't mind trying to "homebrew" one from a 10 round pmag , but it would cost $75 to get the insert from the aics mag , defeating the whole point.  :wb:

If you haven't purchased yet I would go with a Mossberg MVP.  They use standard AR mags and my brother's (varmint model) shoots about 2 moa with bulk and is sub-moa with handloads.

I looked at that one for a while , I just could not get pass blade style sights. Went with the gsr( good deal at the gun show) the peep sights work great  and I can mount either a scout scope or a traditional scope.
But I just checked Mossbergs sight and now they make the mvp in 308 with peep sights. Shoulda woulda coulda

I've worn bi-focals since 4th grade.  I'm a confirmed optics shooter.  Irons are only good to me for large close targets.  I have learned to shoot irons to standard on paper targets but outside of that I'm not comfortable using them to hunt with.

I here ya on Irons, I like them for the simplicity and ruggedness.  It is easier to get proper sight alignment with two points of reference.
My issues was stage 4 I just could not get over the hump shooting 170-185 my first 3 appleseeds.  Just went to number 4 with 9mm4545 in new smyrna and shot 205 with a scope. Upon further reflection it may not have been the scope that made the difference but me and more dry fire.  I am going to continue with the scope until I earn my patch , they try it again with the Irons.

Magpul MVP (either 5.56 or 7.62) have NEVER let me down.

Think this is a necro, but because I went through this myself recently: MDT is where I would go for 10 rounders in .223. They were (are?) generally regarded as much better than AICS's in-house polymer 5.56 magazines.

To Cable Guy and Charles McKinley,
Bless your heart,
Yes,I've shot rifleman and long distance both with a scope after years of using open sights. This year I wanted to go back in time and shoot AQT for score, so I spent two weeks with TechSights and a lot of ammo with my most accurate rifle.Guess what.... at the end I came home and told my wife that I was on a fool's errand.I can't so back in time.I even owned a Delorean at one time. The fool tried...no luck...back to the scopes.         :DH:        :F       Ken

Hi Ken,

At least you were able to use them at one time.  Be thankful we live in a time of readily available good to excellent scopes.

Keep your powder dry and knives sharp,

Chuck
