Yep, I've only taught a few dozen just the opposite. I was trying to find the thread were the AZ AS instructors KICKED the mil and LE's tail in the SDM competitions where they were using a sling/Appleseed techniques while they (mil/le) were using the mags as a mono pod. Ain't good for maintaining NPOA for rapid fire. Don't get me wrong, more tools in the tool box the better but give the ALL the tools along with pros/cons of each.

Of course you are right, high $$$ quality equipment will let you get away with a lot of things. Equipment race? :)....O.L.

That was the 2011 Arizona "All Weapons Weekend" or the Desert Warrior Sustainment Exercise.

We'll have a writeup in the next couple days for the 2012 one which we just participated in, this last weekend.

Lots of monopoding.  Not a lot of slinging.  Didn't see a lot of monopoder shooters in the top 25% of rankings.

However... the guys with "Governor's Dozen" patches are slinging.  Just sayin'.   :pop:

Hmm.  I just kicked a bunch of "Governors Dozen" butts at the All Army Competition earlier this month.  Oh, and I was monopoding.  So did a bunch more of my team.  One was the 2nd place overall shooter out of 300 and something competitors.  The match winner(from another team) also monopoded off the magazine.

I guess the 242 FD/AQT I shot last summer at Ramseur with my 5.56mm AR isnt good either since I monopoded because I accidently forgot my sling at home.

Like I said earlier, I am not saying one is better than another.  Its another tool in the tool box for us to know, not necassarily teach it since its not the Appleseed way and thats fine.  The main thing I was pointing out earlier is that it does not cause a malfunction and I didn't want somebody leaving with that impression.  I love the sling.  Shooting rack grade, non-free floated, M16's in combat matches, the monopod tends to be giving better results in mine and several others shooters experiences.  Right now two of my supervisors are two of the absolute best shots the military has had in the last two decades and competed around the world in standard highpower and combat matches, dual Distinguished, Presidents Hundred guys(multiple times over), and they primarily teach the magazine as a support, with the sling taught in only a few instances.

Give me a free floated AR/M16 and I will sling up all day long.  But back to the malfunctions, I have taught to shoot off the magazine(Its what the Army has begun to adapt to) as a rest since 2009 to thousands upon thousands of soldiers.  Not once has it caused a malfunction.  I do this for a living.  I dont shoot and teach it for a weekend hobby or something.  And I only teach what works.  I have a low tolerance for stupidity and won't regurgitate it.  At the same time I have set-up three military only Appleseeds because I believe in that as well.

Boltgun,

What about pulling into the back of the Mag?
That's what the Marine Field Manual was warning against.
I think it was from '99 or 2000

Lots of info in that manual.

I couldn't give you a definitive answer on that one.  I typically dont pull the mag back into anything, I either rest it on the ground or push it against something already on the ground.  But that being said I have been practicing a kneeling position lately where I rest the M16 over my knee with my knee in-between the magazine and pistol grip, it gives several more points of contact.  Technically that is pulling the magazine back into my knee, but I haven't fired tens of thousands of rounds that way to say that it wont cause a malfunction unlike I have done from simply resting the mag on the ground.
