I also sent this announcement out to my work, with some of the story borrowed from elsewhere in the forum since it was said so well...  Use every opportunity to make people think!

In the early hours of April 19, 1775, a woman put supplies together for the men of the Acton militia while they discussed the alarm that the British Regulars were out and headed for the neighboring community of Concord to confiscate that town's ball and powder.  As the men filed out, the leader, Isaac Davis, paused, and turned to his wife, Hannah, searching for the words to say.  He finally said "Take good care of the children," then disappeared into the pre-dawn darkness.  You see, his four children were very sick, two with signs of Scarlet Fever, an often fatal illness at the time, and their future was far from certain.  Hannah later wrote "I knew in my heart, that I would not see him again in this world."

Later that morning, while gathered on the hill overlooking Concord and watching smoke rise from the town, Colonel Barrett of the Concord militia asked for volunteers to lead the march down the hill the confront the Regulars at the North Bridge.  Isaac stepped forward, saying "I have not a man that is afraid to go."  When the militiamen met the Regulars at the North Bridge, the Regulars fired off a ragged volley, of which most shots went high.  However, not all missed, and Isaac Davis was killed by a hit to the chest.  His men returned fire with great accuracy, causing the Regulars to break and run, and completing the "second of three strikes of the match" that started our Revolutionary War.

Hannah Davis knew in her heart that she would not see Isaac alive again, yet she let him go. To lose a husband in New England in 1775, with a house full of sick children, would have been a hardship of desperate measure and still, she let him go. Hannah Davis placed a high price on Liberty and she paid in full on April 19th, 1775.  I think that through Hannah's diary, Isaac is in fact speaking to every one of us - are we taking good care of the children? Are we doing everything we can to ensure their Liberty?  Isaac Davis gave his life for ours. I often wonder how many of us could make the same choice.

It is with great honor and remembrance of this family's sacrifice that I introduce you to our new daughter, Hannah Grace Dilts, born at home on May 30, 2011 at 12:20 AM, weighing 8 lbs, 5 oz, and 21 inches long.  My wife and I couldn't be prouder.
