Freaking Brrrrr!  But, I gotta say I had a lot of fun this weekend.  We had our first Nebraska Winterseed hosted by the Lincoln Izaak Walton League.  Saturday had a high somewhere in the low 20s with a light breeze, and the sun even peaked out for a bit in the early afternoon to make it downright balmy.  We had a few no-shows from the pre-reg list and ended up with 3 shooters and 5 instructors (Squirrel7, HatchetJack, m4man, Sharps74, and me).   Saturday went well and by the end of the day we had gotten through our first two AQTs with one Winterseed Rifleman made.  Sunday also peaked a high somewhere in the low 20s, but the breeze dropped off making it feel a little warmer than the first day and we made one other Winterseed Rifleman out of the attendees, while all 4 of the IITs rotated in for an AQT to earn their Winterseed patches.

Now, onto the pictures...

Welcome to Winterseed!

Who can tell me the 6 Steps of firing the shot?

So how many minutes is 1.25 inches at 25 yards?

Redcoat: 13 rounds from your favorite position.

We were lucky and Sharps let us into the clubhouse to warm up for lunch while we found out what happened down the road at a little town called Concord.

Here's our Saturday Rifleman, with a score of 230.  He went on to shoot Rifleman three more times on Sunday with a high of 241.

Here's a crew of Winterseeding Nebraska IITs.  Squirrel had a malf on Stage 2 and only got off 6 rounds, yet he still scored a 218.  Sharps picked up a 240 and then a 241.  M4man scored a 240 on his first AQT, but then on his second, he scored a <wait for it>, a 250!  Yeah, he cleaned the AQT.  Impressive marksmanship skills all around.

Hatchet Jack, another Nebraska IIT, earned his Winterseed patch with a 234.

On our last AQT of the day, this Appleseeder scored an impressive 222, also earning his Winterseed patch!

Thanks to the Lincoln Ikes range for hosting the event, and both the IITs and the shooters who came out to make this a great (and freezing) weekend!  O0

Thanks to everyone who showed up and braved the cold.  I think my feet are finally thawed out.  Next time I'll be smart enough to don my Sorels on Saturday instead of Sunday...

I had a really good time at this shoot, despite the low turnout.  I wasn't too surprised that we had so many no-shows considering temperatures earlier that week had been in the -10 or so range.

I talked with the range manager briefly on Saturday and he suggested we all shoot shoeless and add the story of Valley Forge!  On a more serious note speaking as an Ikes member, the Lincoln Ikes love Appleseed since both groups make a very concerted effort to reach out to new shooters, especially women and kids.  It's too bad our original November date didn't work out since the range was a soupy mess, but I know the range is eager to host more shoots.  At least this way I had the opportunity to earn an awesome Winterseed patch!

Our first Rifleman of the weekend looked like he was a natural shooter.  When I saw him drop into a perfect prone position on the first redcoat I knew he was going to do well.  I was even more proud of our other two shooters though.  Our other Rifleman struggled with equipment throughout the weekend but persevered and ended up shooting a great score with a borrowed rifle and earning his patch.  The young lady had only shot a couple of times before this weekend, and went from not even hitting the paper on her first redcoat to scoring some very respectable targets in the 100's.

With scores/shooting like that I believe I'll have to import freezing temperatures to SoCal so I'm not so envious.

Congratulations to all.

And I get people who bail because of a little rain  ++)
