It appears to be the base for the removeable grenade launching sight...

It also appears to be attached with non-GI commercial wood screws.

Thanks Fred.

It came this way from the CMP.  I'm really curious because you think its non-GI.

The screws appear not to be original, but I've seen many things "jury-rigged" in military service including handmade nuts for mounting buttplates on synthetic M14 stocks, handmade reinforcement backers for walnut E2 stocks, etc - I'm simply saying from the image the screws do not appear to be the original screws issued with the grenade launcher sight.

You have an interesting rifle, there. I don't recall ever seeing one with the grenade sight mount, or even the screw holes for one.

OTOH, out of the thousands of M14 stocks I've seen, I've only seen a handful of them with either the mount or the screw holes...

I've seen M1's at the North Store with the grenade launcher sight base and my cousing even bought one.

If you really want one of the sights check out e-bay.  I used to see them there all the time.

If you really want one send me a PM and I'll provide a link for a complete sight in case with instructions for under $20.

These are fairly common on some of the recent rifles that came back from Greece.

Now that you mention it, the one my cousing bought was a Greek rack grade return (so was one of mine but it did not have the grenade sight base on it).
