With all the attention being paid to LTR and more and more using them in Appleseed, I have come up with a good way to do the Ball & Dummy drills.

Pachmayr makes .22 LR Snap Caps and they will feed through the magazine. I mix them with ammo in the 10/22 mags for my training as well as for others.

They come in pks. of 24 ea. and they can be used many times each.
I have also used them in my Ciener Kit for my AR's as well my Ciener Kit for 1911's and they work great.

I have found these to work well, also. Available from Midway (midwayusa.com) item # 521044. Retail price $5.99/pkg of 24.

Shoot enough of the real cheap .22 ammo and you'll get all the ball and dummy practice you need. I can especially recommend Federal Walmart Bulk lot number 1AV592.  :)

I have tried all of the bulk packs that my local Wal-Mart sells.
I have the most mis-fires with the Rem. Golden Bullets( plus what seems to be oversized cartridges in some packs), almost as many with the Win.
In the last month, I have shot 5 ea. of the Federal 550 packs and have not had the first dud.
I now will only buy the Feds. and use them in all my .22's including Ciener Kits for my AR's and 1911 Commander sized pistols.

The Fed Walmart Bulk is USUALLY extremely reliable (though not particularly accurate) but that particular lot was giving me up to 10% misfires in some guns this summer. I think the brass was either thicker or harder than normal because there was a direct correlation between the fire rate and how hard a particular gun smacked the rim.

I shot over 5000 rounds of Walmart Remington Golden Bullets this year (closer to 6K, really) out of a Ciener-converted 1911 with a brand-new GI mainspring (very firm swat) and had a consistent dud rate of a bit over one percent--most 100-round sessions had one dud, some sessions had two, a few sessions had none. Most of these would not fire with a second strike, even if hit elsewhere on the rim, indicating no primer at all in there. At the relative low cost of this ammo, I consider a few duds just "cost of doing bidness."

This year alone I've fired over 26K of Fed Walmart Bulks, Rem GBs, Winchester XPerts, and Fed 510 Champions out of two or three dozen different guns (rifles and handguns both), so I feel like I have a pretty good feeling for what's going on with these four types of ammo, anyway.

Son of Martha

Thanks for the heads up, Ken.  We have been a little concerned over "B&D" with a .22LR...

As for the .22lr, gotta love the 550 rnd value packs....do we live in a great country or what?

SOM, I have found that the .22 Snapcaps will feed from Tube Magazines as well as the others.
They work great showing someone what is going on when they shoot.

Friday is my Birthday (70) and I told everyone to get Federal Bulk Packs as my gifts rather than money or whatever.

Will spend the day at the range with son, grandson( maybe two) and great-grandson shooting .22's,AR's,a Mini 14 ,1911's and conversion kits for Ar's and 1911's.
I will use the Snapcaps also as one of them has not had them pulled on him before. This will be his first Ball & Dummy drill. He is my Great-Grandson (8 yrs) and has killed 2 wild boars, one last year and one last week.

Whoo-Hoo!  Great going Ken!  I can't really think of a better way to spend your 70TH.  You know, long after you are gone, your grandkids will remember this....

I figure your son (50+) should get it, your grandson (30+) is wondering what the hell is going on, and your g-grandson (8+) is LOVING it...

You are a lucky man...

Give those young'uns a swat on the a$$ for me....

Don't buy the Tipton, they're junk, BTDT. Mine were miserable to feed through a 10/22.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

For one-man Ball & Dummy Drills, I'll share with you all some advice from Fred himself (paraphrased) --
If you get a batch of surplus ammo that doesn't fire reliably, be sure to bring at least a few rounds to the range with you every time.  If it goes Bang, no problem; if it doesn't, you have a spontaneous Ball & Dummy.

I have some 1954 Yugo 8mm that is ideal for this.
