I have a modified 10/22 that shoots great (have $200 in mods) and a 597 that has maybe $50 in mods (extractor and hammer).

The 597 shoots way better out of the box in my experience. The aftermarket extractor eliminates stovepipes, which was the only problem I ever had with it. Didn't have to have the lighter hammer, supposed to decrease lock time.

Doesn't have the mag jams like the 10/22 does, just a good rifle. FWIW....for $119, a HECK of a deal!

My .22 has a preferance of Ammo. The Federals jam, and it hates them. It loves Eley Sport. But go figure, it also likes Remington 525 Golden Bullet. I need a Rifle Whisperer.

I don't know if it's been covered before but if you take the 10-22 mags and make sure the allen screw on the end is tight, then take an emery board and clean up the rough edges and smooth out the mold flashings, they fall out and go in like a champ....O.L.
