After Action Report: RKD Orlando, FL. Dec 13-14, 2025

Nine eager students gathered at the Central Florida Rifle & Pistol Club in Orlando on Saturday morning prepared for a typical Florida Winter day. The weather proved agreeable, setting the stage for a productive two-day clinic.

Saturday: Instruction and Practice
The 200 Yard Rimfire Known Distance clinic began with an overview of the Three Challenges of a Rifleman. The details of Making the Shot-- IMC, Trajectory, and Come ups were covered. Ballistic Tables and a simplified wind rule for rimfire were presented. The importance of collecting Data on Personal Equipment (DOPE) was discussed. The other two Challenges, Target Detection and Range Estimation, were deferred to Sunday.

By 10:00 AM we were ready for the Safety Briefing and Line Drill. We moved to the 50-yard line where sighter groups were shot from a supported prone position. After DOPE was collected, the first stage of the AQT, Standing, was completed. We then humped to the 100-yard firing line to repeat the process of sighters and DOPE collection. By this time we were ready for lunch, so we circled up to hear the story of Timothy Murphy and a review of the morning's activity.

The afternoon began with a dry run of the Transition to Seated before shooting for score on Stage 2.  Similarly, Stage 3 at 150 yards and Stage 4 at 200 yards followed.

After completing this first AQT run it was determined we had met all our goals for day one. Scores were tallied and congratulations were in order for several shooters who successfully shot the 40 points to earn the Rimfire Rifleman designation: Ahmet 44, Cody 46 (with a bolt-action), David 44, and Michael 43. John was just shy of scoring with 39.

Daylight was soon fading so we reviewed our progress and previewed the plan for Sunday before rifles were safely packed up.

Sunday: Drills and Achievements
Sunday morning began with a call to action for volunteers to join Morgan's Rifle Company. While several came close to marking the shingle with a cold bore shot from 125 yards, only one, David, proved himself worthy of the honor.

By 9:15 AM, shooters were ready for the first AQT of the day. David continued his success from Saturday with a 46.

Presentation of the Challenges of a Rifleman continued with Target Detection, Range Estimation, and other Environmental Factors. Their new knowledge of Range Estimation was put to the test as the students measured objects posted at 100 yards to determine their relative  distance.

During lunch we heard the story of the Over Mountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain.

The Ball & Dummy Drill preceded another AQT, where Ryan scored a qualifying 40 and David showed his skill by shooting 48/50 for Distinguished Rifleman. On the third and final AQT of the day Ahmet proved he knew his stuff with a 40 and Ryan scored a solid 45.

We finished the day with a sharing of lessons learned and discussion of Good, Bad, and Ugly. The good news was there weren't any Bad or Ugly things to discuss. Everyone is looking forward to their next Appleseed Challenge: the full -distance KD at Palm Bay in May.
