Washingtonians are not usually found outside while the great fireball bakes us, but 9 brave souls joined us for a very warm Rimfire Known Distance event at WCW Shooting Sports.

These events are a great way for shooters from previous events to show us that they have mastered fundamentals of rifle marksmanship at 25m and are ready for a greater challenge.  As always, we started out the weekend with shots at Morgan's Shingle.  Thanks to Liam, we had actual wooden shingles cut to the appropriate size, and all 9 shooters were allowed to take one (and only one!) cold bore shot at the shingle.  None of our shooters earned the distinction of joining Morgan's Rifle Company on Saturday... but several would on Sunday!

Saturday, we spent time coaching shooters on how to compensate for the force of gravity on their bullets, and collecting real data on how their equipment performs at distance.  All of our shooters were able to collect data at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards.  We managed to complete an AQT over the course of Saturday.

Sunday, we started off again with Morgan's Shingle.  We had 4 shooters hit their shingles!  Dustin, Josh, Rob, and Eric all scored a hit!  We celebrated by reading a letter from John Adams discussing that Congress had authorized the raising of several Rifle Companies, and we gave 3 cheers of HUZZAH!

Other than AQTs, Sunday was filled with a few fun (and practical) exercises:  Target Detection, Range Estimation, Scope Subtension and Adjustment calibration, and an exercise in engaging targets at 100 and 200 yards in the same string of fire!  Instructors and students alike got a good workout running back and forth to the target lines.

At the end of the weekend, 3 shooters earned their Rimfire Known Distance patches.  Congratulations to Michael, Jamison, and Eric!

Shooters, it's important for you to remember that the fundamentals we teach at our 25m events truly apply at all distances.  Whether you're taking your rimfire rifle out to 200 yards (or beyond!) or taking your centerfire rifle out as far as it will go, you have the tools you need to place rounds on target.  Remember that dry fire is free and involves a lot less walking downrange :D

Thank you to WCW Shooting Sports for the use of their facilities this weekend.  I'm very thankful that we have such a supporting host range that lets us get more Americans involved in shooting, and helps us turn Americans into Riflemen.

Instructors:  Thank you for all your hard work this weekend, especially in keeping shooters safe and hydrated.  It is always an honor to work with such dedicated and professional folks in spreading the message of Liberty.
Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.

The wooden shingles really do sound like a cool idea. I'll have to look at making some for the next RKD I go to

Agreed - the real shingles are a nice touch!  Sounds like a great event!  Great advice on dry fire and remembering fundamentals at ALL distances!
It's not about perfection -- it's about progress!!

I LOVE this stuff!

"Perhaps you and I have lived with this miracle too long to be properly appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again" Ronald Reagan

It took me a while to decide not to build a shadowbox for my shingle and patch. I ended up sewing the patch to my shooting mat, and I'll keep the shingle with my first qualifying AQT. :)

Jamison

This was a really great event. I had a lot of fun.

Liam did great and made a lot of shingles, so there's extras pre-made for next time. As old as the shingles were, I was surprised that none of them cracked when hit.

Another really neat feature of the shingles is stick a stick into the hole and it's a great trajectory visualization

Love seeing this report and the pictures. Very cool idea of bringing actual shingles. I attend my first rimfire KD in October and I'm so excited!

Thanks for putting on a great event, I was excited to get my Rimfire Known Distance patch.
