Fall arrived (ish) and gave us a.22LR  Rimfire, Known Distance shoot at the lovely and gracious Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club.  Kudos to Jason (Hardtack), Judy (JLevine), and Bob (Messer) for coming out to keep me in line, everyone safe and take much of the load.   We were blessed with Fall like weather on Saturday.  Sunday had a bit of rain but was not overly oppressive.  We started with a red coat and moved on to polishing our groups on squares at 25 yards.  Once the groups were well controlled we moved out to 50 yards looking for differences in point of impact. We learned the use of a witness target to record data, made corrections as desired and shot it again.  Repeat process for 75 yards then out to 100 yards.  Shot group expansion proved to be as expected and bullet drop was really discovered at this distance.  We took this data and shot an AQT Standing for 25, Seated for 50, Rapid prone for 75 and Slow fire prone for 100.
We closed out day 1 with a redcoat having one student clear it and earning a Virginia patch.  Pictures to follow.
Club rules do not allow for shooting on Sunday mornings so we packed in Strikes 2 and 3, Dangerous Old Men and some other history bits, (First Strike was Saturday) Known Distance discussion, basic ballistic theory, and target identification and ranging. As always, we opened with a redcoat (with 2 more Virgina patches earned) and shot 2 more AQTs. Closing was a standard redcoat (yet one more Virginia patch earned) followed by one at 50 yards on the standard 25 yard target (I like being mean >:D >:D >:D >:D).
The last event was the whacky ammo experience testing out various bullet weights and velocities for variance in point of impact and discussion vs "known" ammo.
Many thanks to the shooters who stayed safe and focused throughout the weekend and especially Declan (age 9) who set an example the adults had to follow for consistent safety.  Thanks to "Messer" for coordinating with other shooters on the range so they and we had the opportunities needed.  Thanks also for the Third Strike.  Thanks to "JLevine" for Dangerous Old Men.  Thanks to "Hardtack" for "batting utility" for us and helping everywhere on the line.
My only concern is that we cannot declare Rivanna to be "Velociraptor Free" as we did not get to engage in Velociraptor eradication due to rain.  Maybe next time! :snipersmi

I'm happy Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club was able to offer the facilities to hold this event when the originally scheduled facility became unavailable.

As always, Project Appleseed's safety oriented program makes getting these events approved much easier.

To my fellow instructors, Thank You for all that you do and for making the Virginia Cadre the fun family we all enjoy spending time with!  O0

I think everyone enjoyed the weekend, the rain on Sunday did prevent a couple of fun challenges, but I only saw smiles at the end of the day! All of the students improved their skills over the course of the weekend, and I saw a few "A-Ha" faces when people realized the fundamentals of making a good shot at 25 yards work just as well at 50, 75 & 100 yards.

Special thanks to Alan (The Wolfhound) for scheduling this class and for being the best history teacher I've ever had!

Stay Vigilant,
Messer

I finally got the pictures off my phone.

And more pictures of patches awarded for clean redcoat targets! Well done all!

Thanks Instructors, it was a good weekend for spotting Red Coats! And congrats to the Marksmen!  Looking forward to my next Appleseed event...Trying to put a 22lr together that's not too heavy but has good optics on the 100yd for the next Known Distance.
