14 eager shooters greeted a full stable of Instructors on Saturday morning. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was gracious as always and the day itself was beautiful, albeit chilly. Luckily, we had a spacious and warm classroom to begin the day in. We started at 8:30 with Introductions and rolled quickly into the basic instruction on the functionality of a rifle and its parts, a magazine and cartridges. Next, we moved on to the 4 Safety Rules, Safe Rifle and Ammunition difficulties before moving the rifles to the line.

Once outside the firehouse of instruction began! We taught hasty sling, loop sling and the prone position. Then the first 3 steps of firing the shot, NPOA and took an eye dominance test. Then we learned the line commands and only then did we get down on the mats. I had my instructors do an equipment check and rifle fitting with foam and vet wrap and did a dry-fire exercise.

Next, we did a review of the first 3 steps of firing the shot before learning the last 3. Finally, The shooters put it all together and shot the center square as their opening target.  :---  We continued to shoot squares as we shrunk our groups and my Instructors worked with the shooters to adjust their sights.

About 10:30 we switched it up and brought out the redcoat target and learned about Daniel Morgan. We shot it the normal way and saw our efforts were rewarded when 2 shooters cleared the Redcoat entirely! Huzzah!

We then shot the test. 5 rounds on the 100 yd target at 1pt a piece, 5 rounds at the 200 yd target at 2pt a piece, 5 rounds at the 300 yard target at 3pt a piece and 5 rounds at the 400 yd target at 4 pts a piece. Each in a minute for a total possible of 50, with 40 earning you a pin and 50 a decal. We had a couple qualifiers and then they got the bonus round with 1 on the shingle for 5 points and no time limit. And we did the test once more after that.

Our shooting done for the day, we headed inside for the benediction and the presentation of some well earned prizes.

Clayton got a pack of playing cards for clearing the opening redcoat.  O0

David got a pack of cards for clearing the opening redcoat too.  O0

Thompson and Steven shot 40 0r higher and earned a pin
Clayton, David and Brian shot 50 or higher and got a decal.
Well done all!  ^:)^

Thanks to all my Instructors and to the shooters. I hope to see you again on the line soon. And another thank you to the CCSO.

What a great morning this was. My group was 6 of the 14, including 3 boys ages 9 to 11. They were tired and hungry by the end but they had definitely learned a lot. They're already talking about getting to the range more and going on a hunting trip eventually. I'm sure we'll be taking the 2 day course also. I learned some about setting up the rifles a little better for the boys too. All the instructors were just excellent. Thanks so much.

I will definitely highly recommend this 1/2 day class for new and young shooters. I'm not sure we could have handled that pace for a whole day or two. It was an intense 4 hours, lol. This class gave us a lot to work on so we can practice up and be better prepared for the full class.

Special thanks to @6bones (not sure if I can tag him). He answered a number of questions before the class and made sure we'd have loaner rifles for our big group.

I just want to thank each of the shooters that came out to this event.  This was such a fantastic group to work with.  Everyone came with teachable attitudes, and I am absolutely confident that each of you can earn a rifleman's patch at a full event after some perfect practice.  I can't wait to see each of you back on the line soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this event. The shooters were engaged and showed great improvement. And, as usual, the instructors did an excellent job. A well executed event overall!
