What a great Appleseed.  We returned to Cardinal Shooting Center near Marengo, Ohio for another shoot.  Sixteen shooters showed up on time with positive attitudes and a desire to improve.  We had the pleasure this shoot to move from the pistol bays we had used in the past to the new small bore range. What a great facility.  Concrete walks down range to our line.  Beautiful covered shooting stations. Cardinal is building a truly first class small bore facility.  Once completed, it will accommodate 200 shooters on its line.

After the usual welcome and safety brief, rifles were brought to the line and the Saturday morning Red Coat was shot.  Results were encouraging.  Out of 16 shooters, we had 10 with three shots at 100, 8 at 200, 5 at 300, 3 at 400 and 3 joined Daniel Morgan.  We had one cleared Red Coat by one of our instructors that was just shooting this weekend.  (He actually cleared all 4 over the course of the weekend.  Good shooting Chewie)

We moved forward with instructions on steady hold factors in prone, the Six Steps to firing a shot and NPOA, shooting related drills to practice each of these instruction sets.  IMC was presented, sights were adjusted.  We broke for lunch and the Third Strike.  Confirmation groups were shot just after lunch and a follow up cycle of sight adjustments and confirmation groups were shot.

Steady hold in seated and in standing were presented with related drills for both positions.  The Second Strike was presented at the afternoon break and a practice AQT was shot after the break.

This was followed by the afternoon Red Coat. The results were solid.  With 16 shooters, we had 13 at 100, 7 at 200, 6 at 300, 5 at 400, and 3 joined Daniel Morgan with a shingle hit. Huzzah!

The Third Strike ended the day.

Sunday dawned with great weather again.   The morning Red Coat results were good. 13 at 100, 13 at 200, 7 at 300, 1 at 400 and 6 joined Daniel Morgan.

After some NPOA/Rifleman's cadence drills, we moved to the AQTs.  We worked through two in the morning followed by a KD talk at lunch.  Three more were shot in the afternoon.  We had four shooters that showed that they were "Men who know what they are about".

Brendon showed his skills with scores of 215, 216, and 220
Brian qualified on his first AQT with a 228 (he switched to an open sighted rifle after qualifying)
Larry 2 qualified with scores of 223 and 218
Chewie (AS Instructor) re-qualified with the high score of the weekend, 234.

Others were knocking on the door.  Our Well Armed Women shooters (Deb and Diana) were shooting solid scores in the 180's. I have to say that Deb has the smoothest mag changes in stages 2 & 3 that I have seen in a long time.  John, William and Lee were in the high 190's and/or the 200's.  I am sure that all of them will patch at their next event.

The final Red Coat showed that the weekend was a success.  With 15 shooters at this point, we had 10 at 100, 10 at 200, 8 at 300 and 3 at 400.  Seven joined Daniel Morgan.
Our thanks to Cardinal Shooting Center for hosting us and thanks to Cactus Jack, Chewie, and BamaFan7 for helping with the instructions.

Thank you to all the shooters this weekend. It was wonderful working with all of you and seeing you progress your skills throughout the weekend. I hope to see you all again on the Appleseed trail. Persist and persevere!  :F

Lee Burnside

Thanks for a great weekend. Looking forward to a spring return to gather up the elusive rifleman patch.

Lee,

You are knocking on the door.  Some dry firing over the winter and remembering to not grip the stock with your support hand should get you over the hump.  Your groups were solid and it is just the little things at this point keeping you from a patch.

See you in the spring.
