AAR for Abbeville, SC, November 30, 2013

A semi-private one day AS was held on November 30, 2013.  It was held at a farm in Abbeville, SC

there were 12 students; eleven were youths involved in rodeo events.  most were home schooled

This was a fantastic AS event.  The weather was great for late fall in SC.  Chilly in the AM, mild in the PM; sunny throughout.

The range was a horse pasture; with many pasture apples!  The kids being rodeo oriented didn't seem to mind. 

The event was put together on short notice and therefore was not listed on the internet (EventBrite).  It is hoped that future events will allow for more conventional scheduling.

Good:  Excellent well motivated students with attentive parent observers

Bad:  SQUIB shot occurred using a 10/22 and CCI ammo.  I was on ground next to the student instructing when a shot went poof and smoke poured from the 10/22s action.  I immediately told the student to cease fire and notified the line boss.  There was brass stuck  in the chamber and did not extract when the bolt was openned.  The brass was pried out with a knife and found to be ruptured.  A cleaning rod was used to push the stuck bullet out the breach.

This was the first squib that I have observed with a 10/22  ( I have seen two squibs at a center fire benchrest match due to failure to load the handload with powder).

Over all this was a great AS event

Hats off to our students!  It's always a joy working with these kids.  A special shout out to one of our youngest girls who shot a 213 prone supported.  Shoot like a girl... if you can!!

I wasn't there so my perspective is limited.

This looks like it fired out of battery.  It has happened to me three times.  Once on a Thompson Center and twice with a CMMG conversion.

Earlier this year we in GA got the honor of the company of these outstanding Americans at Graben River Farm in Elbert County.  Such motivated youth and their parents are the beacons of hope for this nation, in my honest opinion.

The ceaseless efforts of Steve and his alliance of instructors have obviously been paid back by the interest of those in Abbeville who want to hear the Appleseed message--and improve their marksmanship and 7th Step.
