Has anyone tried it? It is tempting to me since it adds another 3.5" of sight radius since it is a 22" barrel.

I'm not sure how keen I'd be on the weight added by the extra inches on the barrel. It's one thing when you're working with an aluminum/steel-lined barrel, but that seems like it'd be miserable for standing.

Meh... it's a dadgum .22.  It's not going to be too heavy.  If anything a little extra weight on the .22s is nice, to make them feel more like a battle rifle (which is the whole point of an LTR).

It looks like a nice rifle... very similar (if not identical) to the Wal Mart specials that they used to sell.  The price point is over $100 more than a standard 10/22 carbine, but it does have some nice features like the long stainless barrel, and the nice-looking wood stock with studs and swivels installed.  I bet the swivels are 1" though, and will need to be replaced with 1 1/4".  I wonder if you could order one of these with the Ruger instructor purchase program?

I do not add 'within the limits of the law,' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual."

AFTERMATH

It appears to be a prettier version of my Wally-world k10/22.
I never noticed the weight, nor anyone who's shot it.
The stock is longer, which is nice for us larger framed shooters - But too long for small-frame shooters.
Which, is really the only complaint I've had by others.
The sight radius makes it difficult to miss.
The swivels were indeed 1in - Non-detachable.
It very closely mimics a light-weight M1 - and close enough for the M1a

Notes - When I first got mine it had some kinks to work out...  I attribute that to Walmarts way of acquiring the cheapest made stuff ever.  For example - My stainless steel was painted grey.  I'm not even sure it's stainless - It does rust....  Pins were coming loose on me, and the barrel wasn't indexed propperly.  A few thousand rounds later, however - It's like the RPK of .22lr.  Never had a ftf that wasn't directly related to ammo.  And the 9lb trigger pull promotes a proper trigger squeeze.

I'm not sure how many issues the Lipsey model would generate - But it's a Ruger platform.  That all you need to do is swap the sights and swivles/studs, slap a sling on it.  Fill a few magazines and drop down in prone.

My first group was < 4moa - Several weeks after my first AS.  I wasn't even getting that with the loaner I was using my last few AQT's of my first shoot.

Gave me the supreme confidence that I was gonna shoot 210 at my next shoot!  Even though I didn't.
Moral of the story for that one, once you're sure you've got enough loc-tite on that front sight - Add some more!

At that length are you taking away any of the velocity and stability?

Adding inches to your barrel should add velocity. The longer barrel also would likely cause the bullet to be spinning at a rate which is closer to what the rifling dictates and thus be slightly more stable.

How will it add velocity? It's only adding extra drag to the round. From what I understand, the optimal length as far as velocity is concerned is 14". However due to legal restrictions, 16" is the minimum you can buy... the extra two inches drops it appx. 15-20 FPS. Trying to find the article...

I just did some searching myself, and apparently the answer is highly dependent on the ammo. Reading between the lines of the various articles I just skimmed it seems that the higher the rated velocity of the ammo the longer the barrel which is optimal. I had made an assumption about 22LR from what I know about various centerfire cartridges and apparently the relationship does not hold true with 22LR because there is a lower ratio of propellant to mass of the bullet.

Thanks!

Just to add my 02 on this.. I LOVE my Wally World 10/22, which is identical to the Lipsey's version... The extra site radius alone, makes all the difference.. Regarding weight, it's a non-issue really... Besides, when shooting offhand, a heavier rifle is definitely your friend... On a loaner..maybe not so much... BeSwift

I'm sure you lose a tiny bit of velocity with standard .22 loads, but it certainly isn't enough to effect stability, and doesn't matter in the slightest at 25m.  I have seen those Wal-Mart rifles on the line for years, and they always do fine.  One of my fellow Oklahoma Instructors has one, and many Riflemen have been made on it.

Hell, my CZ-452 has almost a 25" barrel, and it is the most accurate .22 I have ever fired.  Also, since it gets such a complete powder burn in the barrel, it is as quiet as a suppressed rifle.  With subsonics, you just hear a little "thud."

I've got 1 1/2 pounds of lead in the forearm of one with a plastic stock, it's a tack driver and made many rifleman. I only loan it to adults. It weighs 6 1/2 pounds...O.L.

From the SAMMI Test Standards for 22LR "All standard 22 rimfire test barrels shall be 24" long; exterior ballistic data for all rimfire rifle cartridges shall be based on this length" It is fairly well understood that a barrel of shorter length will produce less velocity than the standard test length barrel. Meaning your 16-18" barrel is likely NOT producing the velocity listed in the cartridge specification.
What you really need to be asking is how do I get the hole where I want it, not how fast/slow can I put it there. http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/publications/download/208.pdf
