Question for 10-22 experts

Does anyone know the finishing process for a standard 10-22 stock (with the hard plastic stock end and the barrel band)?  Basically this is two questions:

1. Stain color (for touch-up; is there a Minwax standard?)
2. Finish (is it spray polyeurethane, will tung oil produce passable results for touch-up?)

Any advice will be appreciated.

It is certain, I think, that the best government is the one that governs least. But there is a much-neglected corollary: the best citizen is the one who least needs governing. The answer to big government is not private freedom, but private responsibility.

The problem is not Democrats.  The problem is Republicans who lack the intellectual clarity to become libertarians and libertarians who lack the physical discipline to become riflemen.  ---Kenneth Royce

The standard stock has a spray on finish. For touch up use tru oil stock finish. The wood will not readily accept normal wood stain. Use either analine leather die or a similar water based dye. Google rit dye for gunstocks and you should bring up a few hits.

My two babies got rode hard and put away wet at a Chabot shoot. 300 miles later when I opened the cases the polyurethane spray finish peeled off with the case leaving the bare wood. I just swabbed 'em with some old Minwax that was laying around in the garage and they haven't looked back since.... %)

I love the look on people faces when I lend them these battered looking old looking rifles, "what are they". Then when they realize that they shoot straight, don't jam, and just keep on trucking through to yet another Rifleman score they obviously learn to trust 'em.

Doesn't answer your question, but just wanted people to know, they don't have to look pretty to be the most valuable guns in your safe.
