A month back, some nice people at a Jewish Marksmanship blog contacted Appleseed and asked if we would write an article for them on their website both about Appleseed and what draws people to it.

I was happy to put together a short piece for them and explain what drew me in and keeps me coming back both as an American, but also specifically as a Jew (it being a Jewish focus blog and all).

The article went up today for those who are interested in the read:

Jewish Marksmanship: The Appleseed Project

It was a kindness that they did for us in asking, and I am happy to send people their way in return.

Interesting how you made use of some analogies; comparing the theme of Appleseed to the traditions of your people...good job overall.  O0
But, could you explain one thing? Who was this "General Gauge"? Could that be the infamous Tyre Gauge?  ;D

Ha!  I re-read that three times and missed it each time.  I will have him fix it.  Good catch.

Great article, Techres! It is very well-written, and I suspect that the correlation of the living history of Appleseed with the living history of the Seder meal invokes a strong image for the Jewish readers. What a fantastic example of how to maintain the Appleseed message while focusing on your target audience. Well done.   O0

Yes indeed, I believe Brigadier Tyre Gauge commanded a British "Air" borne unit during WWII...

Very good article. Your insight into the striking similarities between the Appleseed Project and the Passover Seder as lived history elucidates the deep significance of the rifle shooting experience for fostering the event participants' connection to and identification with the events and values of America's national birth narrative. I think this concept would go a long way in clarifying the purpose of the Appleseed Project vis-a-vis those on both extremes of "the gun rights issue," who at first wonder what in the world rifle marksmanship has to do with civic involvement.

Just as the Seder invokes rich symbolism through the tastes, smells and textures of symbolic foods that punctuate our hearing of the story so that we see ourselves as joining with our forebears in the crossing from slavery to freedom, so the acrid smell of gunpowder, the muscle memory of firing the shot, the redcoat target blurred behind your crisp front sight, the rocking motion of the recoil and the cadence of gunfire deliver the tangible reality that the story of April 19, 1775 is our story, and the people who risked and gave so much are our progenitors, regardless of when our families arrived in this land. It's more than history, more than cultural heritage or ancestor worship; it's about actively taking ownership of our identity as citizens whose duty it is to persistently preserve, practice and perpetuate the hard-won liberty we have inherited by virtue of living in this special nation.

Excelent job Techres O0
A few years ago I became a charter member of JPFO . Nor sure how or when my membership lapsed ,but it did .
Over the years we bought (with our NRA club ) lots of the fun, informative "Grandpa Jack series comic books.

Not sure if the 2 charters would allow a liason with each other . But every person who cherishes gun rights can sure learn lots at www.jpfo.org
Aaron Zelman would enjoy talking  with you Techres (If you havnt already met)
If my memory servers me -- JPFO was a consultant to author John Ross regarding the " Warsaw ghetto uprising" . Aaron is a wealth of info .

Thanx to all who posted here . Soul Man very well done ^5 ----nice use of imagery  8)

Just found this article. Really well written!! Makes me want to be a better man. Thank you.
~Two Wolves~
A moral compass provides a basis for making decisions; an action is good or bad, right or wrong when viewed in the light of the individual's moral bearing. If no moral compass exists for the individual, then decisions and actions are made on the basis of purely subjective thoughts. This leads to "If it makes me happy, or makes me feel good, or if it's something I simply want to do, then it is right and good."
