10/22 mag drop free solution finally

Several weeks ago I asked for advice on how to make 10/22 mag's drop free.  I received several suggestions mostly related to stock interference suggesting clearancing the stock or grinding on the mags.  None of these suggestions helped.  Finally I removed the action from the stock and the mags still stick.  After studying the situation several times I concluded that the hole in the front on the mag well was causing the mag to rub against the bolt with to much friction.

Sooooooo, I got out my handy dandy little pivioting shaft tool that machinists use to remove the burrs from drilled holes (I have no idea what it's real name is), ground the ball end off so I could get deeper into the mag retaining hole, removed the trigger group, and started relieving the lower portion of the hole.  Low and behold, it worked!  All my mags now drop free.  Tried the same thing on a brand new 10/22 with the same problem and it worked again.  It's probably something that would eventually wear itself loose, but I didn't want wait it out.  Us old people need all the time we can get on the transition stages.

Happy camper I am.  8)  O0

can you take some pictures of what you did, or before/after pictures and the tool you used, too.

That's something that could be made into a "sticky" in this section (meaning it will stay near the top).

Thanks

that would be a riffler file.

did you take the paint off or actually have to remove metal?

I'd have called it a "deburring tool", and when I was working as a machinist, we just took triangular files and hollow-ground them and use that.

I suspect that what the OP used was this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#bur-tools/=86oe5m

What I use is more like this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#deburring-scrapers/=86oedo scroll down to where it says "machinist's scrapers".
Unhappy it is ... to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast, and that the once happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by slaves. Sad alternative! But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?

You would do well to remove the action from the stock, pull the trigger group and remove all of the paint from the inside of the receiver. Solves a lot of issues.  ;)

The tool I used was similar to the McMaster Carr one shown here.   http://www.mcmaster.com/#bur-tools/=86oe5m

Mine was quite simple with a cutter similar to #1 in the picture.  I had to grind off the ball end to get enough depth.  I did have to remove metal to get it to work, not much, but some.  I went slow and checked often.

FWIW,

When I got my butler creek folding stock, I could NOT get my ruger mag out without pushing it from the top through the ejection port. It was because the new stock was squeezing the rear of the magazine on the sides. If you look at a ruger magazine, it flares out and gets notably wider at the back, looking from the bottom of the magazine.  I stuck mine on a bench grinder for a few seconds to take off the flare and now it drops out.

On a tapco stock to be used as a loaner that was squeezing the mag, I added jb weld to make the action wider - to many different mags are used in this rifle
