Title: We lost a good one
Post by: 9mm4545 on November 11, 2020, 09:41:16 AM
It is with extreme sadness that I learned that my good friend and fellow Appleseeder Glen Smoak (Smoakingun) was killed yesterday in a car accident. His wife Christie was severely injured in the accident and is in an ICU in Gainesville. Please pray for Christie and the family in this time of tragedy.

Putnam County, FL (November 11, 2020) - One person was killed and four others suffered injuries following a crash on State Road 100 in Putnam County. The crash took place just before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10th.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene. According to troopers, a 59-year old woman from Palatka was traveling westbound on SR 100 when she lost control of her vehicle, causing it to swerve off the roadway and strike a guardrail. The car then traveled back onto the roadway and collided head-on with a second car. A third vehicle collided with the back of the second vehicle following the head-on crash.

A 47-year-old man (Glen Smoak) driving the second vehicle was killed in the crash with a 46-year-old female passenger in that car suffered serious injuries. The 59-year-old driver of the first vehicle also sustained serious injuries. Two others sustained only minor injuries as a result of the crash.

I had the privilege of giving him his red hat. I shared shoots,  meals and hotel rooms with him. And once, an evening of sipping moonshine. He was a great patriot, an enormous asset for the program and a fine man. I'll miss him. And I'm not the only one.

Summary and Update on Christi . #1
Since not everyone got the updates, the shared info is summarized below followed by latest known info. Posting will be done on state board here to allow everyone who loved Smoak to get info.

News Article. No names mentioned but we think this is the report.

Shands Cancer Hospital at Univ of FL, 1515 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, FL

Unconscious. A fracture in Left leg was "set". Her broken arm is in a cast. Broken ribs injured her heart and required heart surgery.

Looks like a stroke is now affecting left side. Clot formed from heart injury suspected to cause stroke. She remains sedated with breathing tube although she is breathing on her own. She has a feeding tube.

Only the son, Greg,  has been allowed in room and must first go through elaborate gown, glove procedure to protect against infection before entering the room. Daughter, Elizabeth, has not been allowed in as the limit for visitors is 1 only and no switch outs. Family members and neighbors have been in a waiting area. Sooooo hard for them!

No info on services for Glen Smoak yet.

Check back here for future updates as they become known.

One of Smoaks close neighbors asked if the AS folks were going to do something to honor Smoak.
IMHO The AS cadre really should do something to honor...perhaps a 21 gun salute or a memorial similar to our April 19 memorials with rounds ringing steels (at proper distance). Smoak loved that!
Obviously we need a place that can handle it. A gathering of all instructors who knew Smoak at a central-ish location would be really special. If not possible, multiple synchronized memorial shoots at multiple locations. Take pictures or videos and post to share. Ideas? Suggestions?

It's tragic for the family and loved ones.  Everyone wants to do *something*... but what we can do right now is include Christi and her family in our prayers.

Talk to your SC and see what the Florida crew would like to do to honor him.  Perhaps a ceremony when Mrs. Smoak could attend would be comforting to her spirit.  Having fired more than one graveside volley, these happenings are to uplift and console the living as much as they honor the departed.

Let me know if we can be of any assistance in this endeavor as it unfolds.

Sad times, indeed.

I am so sad to hear this news.  It is such a tragedy.

The first time I met Smoak was very early in the morning prior to a Ladyseed at his home range.  He was "griping" at me for not waking him up in the middle of the night when we arrived, rather than sleeping in our car.  We arrived later than expected, and did not want to disturb him and Christi.  The next time we attended an Appleseed at their home range, we made sure to arrive as early as expected and they had a room ready for us.  They welcomed, not only Chuck and I into their home, but all Appleseeders.  Christi is in my prayers for a full recovery, both physically and emotionally.

We have a bunch of Locations and a lot of Instructors and Students That Knew Smoak. I think it would be fitting to do 21 gun Salutes, in Multiple places at the same time If possible. 7 shooters 3 rounds each, High power If Possible.  Oh Yes I do believe that Cookies, or Cake might be called for also.

Pray for Christi, and the Family. Please Rest in Peace Smoak, We will all try to Carry on Your Good works.

UPDATE on Christi Smoak. #2
This just in from family:
Mom broke her left metatarsal bone (foot) as well and it will need plates and surgery. They are continuing to monitor for additional strokes. There is hope that she will regain mobility in her left side, but she will most likely be partially blind in her left eye. She is still on feeding tube, breathing tube, and sedatives. She is slightly responsive to commands by moving her right hand.

Everyone please send your prayers for both Christi and the family.
Folks this new update is in addition to Christi's heart surgery, broken ribs, arm and leg.😢
Sons wife, daughter and her husband continue to remain in waiting area while son Greg is the ONLY one allowed in. Strict mask, gown and glove procedures are followed each time son Greg enters.   Very hard for daughter not to be able to see her mom. These four young folks are showing so much love with their vigil. Smoaks raised good kids!
Daughter in law has brother with apartment nearby. Appleseeders Jean and Frank additionally offered their nearby home for naps and showers for the family.
Don't know of any arrangements for Smoakingun yet

It took me 2 days to be able to come here and write this.  My heart is broken and grieving the loss of a dear friend.  Here was a man who would give you the shirt off his back, a kind and generous soul who was always ready with a smile and a helping hand.  There are so many things I could say about him, but those who knew him already know.  Allow me to share some of my favorite pictures and memories of Smoak, who will never be forgotten.  He was like a brother to me.

My most fun Appleseeds were always with Smoak.  He was so playful and funny.  Our Gainesville cadre is a close-knit family and there will forever be a hole in our shoots where he should be.  We worked many Infernoseeds together! Smoak is the creator of our Florida Infernoseed patch:

Since Smoak did not have the courtesy to receive his red hat in Gainesville (sorry Malibar), we had to blow up his orange hat after the fact.  I think we did a good job:
Smoak loved to blow things up and don't even get me started about the time he blew up tannerite underneath an upside down wheelbarrow.  I think everyone who watched that video peed their pants laughing.

Smoak loved cookies.  And pie.  And donuts too.  This was the picture the Gainesville posse sent him when he missed a shoot in order to be at the NRA convention.  We made sure he regretted that decision:

The tiara!!  OMG this was the best Ladyseed ever!

One time, Smoak could not seem to get the safe rifle teaching straight, so we posted a reminder:

Smoak, you had a big heart, razor-sharp wit, and you were one of the smartest people I've ever known.  And I know a lot of smart people  ;).  You loved liberty and you loved Appleseed.  You taught me so much, about shooting, about instructing, about how to talk to engineers ( ;D), and you were there for me with a supportive shoulder and a compassionate ear when I was going through some very tough times.  Always with humor and understanding.  I am so blessed to have known you.  I know Jesus received you with open arms, and that you are smiling down and watching over us.  You got to meet the founding fathers!  You're probably drinking an ale and picking their brains in a heavenly tavern.

I'm praying for Christi, a faithful lover of God.  I know that He is watching over her and caring for her.  Please bring her through this trial with your grace Lord.

I miss you Smoak!  You live on in our hearts.

I am utterly devastated at Glen's passing. For me, he was my best friend and like a brother. I met him at an event in Gainesville almost 10 years ago. I have the good fortune of living just 10 minutes from him which allowed me to spend quite a bit of time with him - time that I will never forget.

I personally cannot think of anyone who has done so much for so many. Even apart from Appleseed, he was a champion for the 2nd Amendment - constantly teaching men, women, and children to shoot at his home range. Someone on FB said something that I felt was very appropriate - For someone who wasn't a feminist, he empowered a lot of women by teaching them and giving them the skills they would need to defend themselves.

Appleseed memorializes people like Isaac Davis, and rightly so. I know none of us will forget Glen. He was an important part in many of our lives. I wonder if it is not too much to ask if something could done to officially honor his memory, possibly in a more permanent fashion. I'm not sure what that might be, whether a patch worn by instructors or a permanent mention on the Appleseed website - but just something that would endure for at least as long as the program endures.

I'm not really part of the program anymore so it might be out of line for me to request something like that, but if anyone is deserving,  I think it would be Glen. He did so much for so many and gave so much time to the program, I think it would be appropriate for it to give back in some way.

So well said Joshua. Some awesome ideas...will check. Had it not been for Appleseed, we would not have had the enormous privilege to meet Glen or Christi either.
The first ladyseed in the state was held at their property with Trisha as the shoot boss. Quite a few happened there after that and there was actually another private event scheduled for Jan at their home. Obviously that had to be taken off the schedule.
Over the years, whenever SBs were short at an event and Smoak was requested, he went. There was a long standing joke about Bruce making home made cookies as a "bribe".  :1luvu :1luvu  Whenever Smoak showed up, it would likely be the equivalent of more than one instructor. If Smoak was there, everything would be alright. He worked so well with men, women, and children. Watching "daddy Smoak"  work with very fearful women or unruly kids was especially amazing. He was a master at convincing both students and instructors they could do seemingly impossible feats...not only at events but also in the grand adventure of life. Such a gentle Giant. Our brother. Our hero. He had beat a heart attack. He had beat cancer. We thought we had many more years to enjoy him. We were richly blessed to have had him in our lives. Humongous shoes to fill.
Attached photographic "proof" of Smoak at his property leading the pack in spreading hay he purchased for the first ladyseed event.  Yep, it covered so many mostly buried spent cartridges and made it "softer"  :1luvu

Yep, Smoak always went above and beyond to make sure the ladies were comfortable, but he never let us short-change ourselves.  He pushed us (both students and instructors) to go farther than what we ourselves thought we could do, with amazing results.  I used to watch him carefully study a shooter who was having difficulties.  He had this uncanny ability to evaluate body type, shooting position, steady hold factors, and the six steps to firing the shot all at once, and then patiently work with the shooter to get them all lined up.  He would see things no one else picked up on.  He used to good-naturedly make fun of the way engineers think and talk, but I think he was one at heart and that's how he understood their thinking so well  :).  He was a red hat, well, really a green hat, loooooonnnnggg before he actually received the hats.  He used to joke that it was the story-telling that held him back from going for the red hat, but when he finally crossed the chicken line - wow!  What a great storyteller he was!  His stories were passionate and dripping with admiration, respect, and awe at the tales that were coming out of his mouth.

Here is a picture of "Story Time with Uncle Smoak":
He captured the hearts of so many Appleseed students with his stories!

I agree with everyone else that we must absolutely come together to honor this great man!  I would be willing to help organize a gathering of instructors and students who loved Smoak.  It must include cookies (Bruce?).

I don't frequent these forums often but felt compelled to share some memories of Glen.  Everything I would say has already been said so I thought I'd add some pics and other memories.  Like most of you I met Smoak through Appleseed and earned my patch using one of his loaner rifles.  We quickly realized we had a common interest in obscure Military Surplus Rifles.  At the end of the shoots I attended I would always try to bring something different to share and enjoy.  Smoak and I would always compare notes on our most recent acquisitions and decide what we would shoot at the next event.  Everything from Trapdoor Springfield's to 1941 Johnson Rifles, if it used gunpowder, Smoak wanted to shoot it.  Whenever I heard from Smoak I knew something interesting a fun was afoot.  I'm going miss my friend and pray for Christi and family....

I remember him raving about what a special and awesome lady Greg was marrying.  I also remember him complaining about how much he despised wearing a suit, so I knew right then and there what a special person you must be LOL!  I can't even imagine what you and Greg and the whole family must be going through right now.  So many people are fervently praying for your mother-in-law.  She is such a sweet and wonderful woman.  I work right down the street from Shands - I'm going to text you with my phone #, so if there's anything I can do for your family, please let me know!  I can bring food, or offer you a place to crash or shower, or whatever!  Please be assured of my prayers, sending love your way <3.

Not on the board much any more as thousands of miles way, but do catch up occasionally. (Mr. Pete was right, they do not know what AS is out here...)

Having been to numerous AS, Ladyseeds, Instructor events, and other things and stayed at Smoak and Christi's, Smoak having worked tirelessly to fix issues with my Kidd, helped him cook for events...I am beyond stunned by this news. Thank you Florida cadre for doing any and all things to support Christi and the family. They lost a fine dad, husband, neighbor.... and we lost family.

UPDATE on Christi Smoak #3
Since the last update, light sedation has continued. Tubes remain including a breathing tube which also prevents Christi from speaking even if she was able. Brain swelling seems to have lessened somewhat and Christi squeezes with her right hand to request. She is not in a state to be informed about Glen and communicate about it.

Just in from Anne Smoak, (son Greg's wife):
Surgery for screws and plate on Christi's arm is scheduled for today. It is extremely high risk and dangerous because she's on blood thinners. We don't have a time on surgery yet.

Loving, devoted family remains close by. Son Greg is still the only one allowed in. Daughter Elizabeth has not been allowed to visit mom....not even once!
No arrangements have been made for smoakingun as the accident investigation is not complete.
Please keep the prayers going.

Thanks for the update on Christi.  This loss is so hard to put into words.  He was an amazing man, a wonderful parent, and a fabulous Patriot.  As we stumble from the weight of his tragedy, remember what he would want us to do; dust ourselves off, eat a cookie (with ice cream) and teach others with passion, precision, and heart.  I love you all.

I never met the man, but, boy, I wish I did.
He sounds like one hell of a patriot, father, friend.
We are diminished by his passing.
Let us all increase our efforts for liberty, in his memory!

UPDATE on Christi Smoak #4
Christi made it through the arm surgery but she now has pneumonia and the breathing tube remains. They think the antibiotics are working but she still has many challenges from all the broken bones, ribs, "punctured heart", stroke that has happened. ðŸ'" 🙏

Most sincere thanks to all contributing to the GoFundMe.

Really appreciate the updates.  My heart hurts for the family -- I hope they can find comfort in all of the fond memories of Glen and Christi seems to be a very strong woman capable of pulling through all the challenges she is facing and will continue to face.  Dear Lord, I pray for Christi's recovery and her comfort in knowing that Glen is safe with you.

Love you all!
Kim

I was out of town (and therefore off the forum) when this happened so I did not find out until last Tuesday.  It was a shock to say the least and I have had to take a week to be able to process this.  Smoak was at almost every event I worked when I was an active Instructor and I knew him fairly well.  I will miss him but I will not forget him.  We must persist and continue on with the mission.

RIP Smoak

Terry

UPDATE ON CHRISTI SMOAK
Christi is still in ICU but has been moved to a chair occasionally. She still has a tracheostomy which frustrates communication. Quite challenging for her and family. 🙏

UPDATE ON CHRISTI SMOAK
Bruce and I were just now able to talk to Christi with the help of ever faithful, always present son Greg. She is now off breathing support and the tracheotomy is gone which has allowed her to speak. The feeding tube remains in place while food is being tried as tolerated. She can manage some chocolate however.❤️With preference being for dark chocolate.
Son Greg is the only family member allowed for the duration of stay. Thanks to using Face Time, Christi was able to hear her daughter but sight is a challenge.
For now Christi is still in the ICU while the family fights the usual battle with insurance company. For now, it's a battle for moving toward special rehab at UF.
Certainly all the outpouring of prayers has had a part in this miracle. Keep them coming please as there is a very long road ahead.

UPDATE ON CHRISTI SMOAK..........
Posted on FB by Anne Elizabeth Smoak
11am Wednesday 12-9-20
Mom is settled into therapy. No one is allowed anywhere in the building except her designated person, which is Anne.
She is not allowed to have any packages, gifts, or flowers, but you can send cards.
Here is her address:
Christi Smoak
c/o UFHealth Rehab Hospital
2708 SW ARCHER ROAD
GAINESVILLE, FL 32608

ALSO............if you have the means or if you can post to our like minded family:  There is a Fundraiser link -

Will you take a moment to honor Smoak?  How about $9 to represent 9mm or $45 for the thought of a M1911.  It would have brought a smile to his face and it will do good for Christi who is starting rehab alone.  Thank you freinds for what ever you can do.  Much Love - Green Dragons

Green Dragon, thank you for the update and the Go Fund Me link.

I met Glen once at an Appleseed in Hollywood a couple of years ago.  I was an instructor in training and greatly appreciated his dedication, insights and willingness to help me be a better instructor.  I know he is in a much better place now and we are praying for Christi and his entire family.

UPDATE ON CHRISTI SMOAK
FROM THE FAMILY:
Christi Update: "Today was intense. She had occupational and physical therapy. They are working on regaining function on the left side, since it's still a lot of dead weight. Please pray that her brain can learn new pathways to be able to manipulate her left arm. Right now all she can do is lift her shoulder and wiggle her fingertips. She can't make a fist or bend her fingers. Her wrist and forearm are constantly limp.  But we ended the day with some pizza ordered in and that was great comfort food : )"

This is a repost from the Hollywood, FL Dec 12-13, 2020 IAAR.  I was asked to repost here, so the sentiment wouldn't get lost:

I was privileged to receive many comments both in person and via email from many shooters, saying they all had an amazing time, learned so much and were very impressed with how we were able to keep everything socially distanced, safe and made it look easy!

I can't thank enough our South Florida Cadre and all those that came down from the north to make this weekend such a success!  From setup to teardown, nothing, and I mean nothing fell through the cracks!

This was our first event at HRPC since the start of Covid, and it was also the first event we've had the opportunity to share publicly the loss of our fallen Appleseed brother, Glen Smoak.  We place not one but two identical tributes for Glen on each side of the line and also placed the club's American flag at half mast.  Nothing was said about the tribute to Glen until after lunch Saturday.  He was remembered very eloquently by those of us that knew him well, we shared how he was one of the people instrumental in Project Appleseed existing in South Florida.  Cookies were passed out and raised in honor of Glen.

This AS event, will forever be personally very special to me.  Every time I turned around, out of the corner of eye, I could swear I could see Glen smiling upon us!

-Joe

UPDATE ON CHRISTI SMOAK
Christi was discharged on the evening of Dec 23 in the company of immediate family. She will be home with much therapy work ahead. Currently she is not moving her arm and her leg is in a heavy boot. No weight bearing. Greg's wife Anne is assisting and arranging home therapy.
We were blessed to talk with Christi by phone tonight. She tires easily as might be expected. Her voice is stronger and she hopes to attend church tomorrow.
Check her Facebook page "Christ Smoak" for tidbits of news. Message her through Facebook and by all means keep the prayers for healing coming.

The fund for the Smoak Family is at 80% of our goal.
Quite honestly I would like our friends and Appleseed Family to make this happen before our mid-April goal time.
The holiday timing of this tragedy (and miracle) and the hardship caused by the co19 medical shutdown left many struggling during the holidays. But if thing have improved for you I ask of you to please remember our friends when you get a chance.

The GO FUND ME goal of $10,000 for the Smoak Family has been met.

Normally when something like this happens there is usually a round of "good job" and "atta-boys", this ain't that time.

The family has a long way to go and us meeting the fund goal will certainly help them.

BUT WE have 18 days left in the campaign and Appleseeders don't just meet goals. We exceed them. (according to Fred)

So if you have a spare buck or five lets put the cherry on the top of this thing.

UPDATE on Christi:
Christi continues to recover, albeit slowly, from the devastating injuries she suffered. Her spirits and attitude are good and she does show slow improvement in arm and shoulder functioning (following the stroke produced by the injury). There is a problem with a possible entrapped nerve and surgery might be needed to free that but time will tell. Her vision deficits (again produced by the stroke) continue to be a problem but some prismatic glasses seem to help. Driving, unfortunately, is still not possible as her visual field is still too limited. She is living with her son and daughter-in-law in Keystone Heights and continues to see occupational and physical therapists on a regular basis. All prayers for her continued recovery are greatly appreciated and her gratitude to the Appleseed family is immense and heartfelt. As Smoak's employer was slow to release his pension and insurance money, the gofundme efforts by Appleseed was incredibly helpful and hugely appreciated. This is all for now but there will be more in the future.

There has been a memorial service scheduled for our fallen brother Smoak. This is what I got today from his daughter-in-law:

On Saturday November 6th, at 10:00am, we are having a celebration of life service for Glen Smoak IN PERSON. Please bring food to share. Glen loved to eat good food! After the service, everyone is invited to share a potluck meal with us in the Fellowship Hall.

For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be live streamed on the church Youtube Channel here:
