Title: Orwell, Ohio AAR June 27-28, 2020
Post by: Texas T on July 01, 2020, 06:29:34 PM
What a great weekend at the Orwell Gun Club! Beautiful weather, great turnout (sold-out event) and a great team, both shooters and instructors.

We started the morning with our safety brief, followed by the first Redcoat, so that we could see where we were from the starting point. With seven shooters on the line, it was evident that this was a crew who could use some instruction and practice. No shooter had an effective range. None at 400, none at 300, none at 200, and not even one at 100. Someone got a lucky shot on the shingle, but it was obvious that there was no place to go but up. Time to get down to some serious work.

We spent some time working on the foundational elements, including the Steady-hold Factors, the Six Steps to firing a shot and Natural Point of Aim.

Soon, it was time for a break, so we took some time for the First Strike, then the Second, a little later.

Most of the day was spent working on the basics then, since this was our April 19 event, we took time for the Memorial Volley. The targets speak for themselves, but I'd say that the lessons of the day we learned very well...

Sunday dawned as beautiful as Saturday had been. We started the day with a refresher on safety and the building blocks to make a Rifleman. Then it was out to the range to continue practicing what had been demonstrated...

It wasn't long before it was time to accept the AQT challenge.

After a lesson on KD, it was back to working on the AQT. Groups were getting tighter and scores were coming up.

By the end of the weekend, skills had improved so much that we had a new Rifleman, a cleared Redcoat, and a youth shooter who went from hardly on paper to receiving the "Most Improved" award. Atta-Boy, Micah. Remember to keep it methodical. You don't have a machine-gun, make your shots count!

With only nine spots on the line, it was great to have over half of them filled by youth. They are our future, and these were a fantastic example of what can be. Thanks for parents support and taking the time to bring them out to the range.

Lastly, thanks to Orwell Gun Club for hosting our event. Without ranges like this, Appleseed could not exist.

If anyone else has pictures, please feel free to add them.

Thanks again, see you at the next event.
