Title: Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces...
Post by: Maximum Ordinate on March 21, 2020, 07:26:55 PM
Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.
-Attributed to Martin Luther

A few weeks ago, one of our local ranges asked us, "What do you think about Appleseed Park?"

Needless to say, he had my full attention.

Don, the proprietor of Hobbs Island Shooting Range (HISR), was offering Appleseed a bit of land adjacent to the parking areas and the 50m range.  It was a beautiful grassy spot with rich soil, bordering on a farmer's field.  Don suggested we use it a mini park.  A place where we could gather and tell history under some apple trees.

I stood there dumbfounded.  That's just brilliant!

One of the local orchards (Scott's) was taking pre-orders for dormant trees.  Money was donated locally.  Pickup was today and then we headed to the range.

We got two apple trees planted today, a Granny Smith and an Arkansas black.  Both fruit in early October and these two trees are compatible with pollination.  Soon, we'll add some benches and maybe a picnic table or two.  And a sign saying that this is Appleseed Park.  :)

So don't despair... look for opportunities to advance our Mission.  It might be as simple as planting a tree.  Remember, the seeds we plant in difficult times bear fruit, too.

Can't wait to try the cider from those babies!

Just kidding: Granny Smiths are PIE apples.

We ought to try this at all of our favorite haunts.

Greetings All,
In the spirit of this venture, I have a baby Peach Tree that is starting it's second year above ground. Should the opportunity arise to have it transported to your area, I would be honored to donate it to the cause. The tree is the kind that bears peaches with white meat, their wonderful.

What amazing symbolism .This is one of those concepts that could proliferate into mastheads for the mission.       :slap:

Very cool Max!  I saw this on your Facebook page with a very appropriate quote from a friend!

QuoteA society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit.

Now -that's- putting the "Apple" in Appleseed!  In a few years I hope you make a really great pie from it.   I reallly like the idea, and kudos to the range owner for providing the spot.  That's a great gesture.

As a former State of Tennessee Forestry Technician,  I can say that you don't generally plant trees for your benefit, but rather for future generations (sound familiar?).  I was just talking with my father today about his yard.  I said that you have to anticipate what you will need in 40 years, not what you need today.

Very nicely done! Love the X RINGS plate.

If I put those plates on my truck, I know it would be safe from me bumping into stuff.  Since I never seem to be able to hit the Xring   **)

A happy update to this story.  We quietly added a couple more trees to Appleseed Park in 2021.

Today, Don sent us a picture of the first apples!  (Thanks, Don and the rest of the HISR crew!)

Always remember - the seeds we plant in difficult times bear fruit, too.
