What a great weekend! Six shooters joined us at Orwell Gun Club, bright and early Saturday morning, to learn the Appleseed techniques and to sharpen their skills. We began the weekend with a briefing on safety, including the four safety rules and how to make the rifle safe after a string of fire. Once the basics were covered, we moved out to the range and took on the first Redcoat. Richard showed the rest of the group that he "Knew what he was about".
We followed that with some instruction on the Steady Hold Factors, the Six Steps to Firing the Shot and Natural Point of Aim.
After learning the basics, it was time to put them into practice. No time was wasted, as we moved into Carding the Sights, in order to reinforce what we had learned about NPOA.
After spending the morning working on tighter groups, it was time to learn the basics of Inches, Minutes and Clicks, so that we could move the groups onto the intended target.
Once we had adjusted sighting systems, it was time to learn some additional shooting positions.
Richard once again showed that he knew what he was about by immediately qualifying on the first AQT.
By the end of the day, John also showed off his skills, as both he and Richard cleared the afternoon Redcoat.
Sunday opened with weather that matched Saturday, PERFECT! The morning started with a brief refresher on the basics, along with Steady Hold Factors for all positions.
Both Richard and John again showed their skills by scoring well on the first AQT of the day.
Now it was down to working on technique, as the quest for Riflemen continued
A number of excellent examples of form were seen.
The standing position didn't present any challenges for this group, either.
Many think that, if you blow a string of fire, you're done for that AQT. Richard showed that isn't the case, as he qualified even after suffering a jam that he could not clear in time...
We continued through the afternoon, taking a break to hear about some Dangerous Old Men.
We even had an opportunity for a couple of instructors to shoot, with Ron posting a re-qualifying score.
Wait, what's this? A surprise guest instructor showed up on Sunday afternoon.
Taking a break from the AQT drills, everyone competed in a team challenge. Check out that target, posted by the winning team...
Sunday afternoon, the closing Redcoat was the highlight of the day. Sydnee started the weekend barely able to put rounds on target, and ended by clearing the Redcoat! Great work by Sydnee, and great assistance from dad, in the background and preparing magazines. Thanks to the entire family for coming out.
Everyone knows that the youth are our future. How impressive is it when half of the shooters at an event are youth? Thanks to the parents for raising such fine examples of what youth can be, and thanks for bringing them out.
After the event was over, a few stayed on to put some rounds downrange at 100-yard steel targets. Boy, could they make that steel ring!
I'd like to thank everyone for coming out. We had a great group of shooters and instructors.
Lastly, we would all like to thank Orwell Gun Club for proving the venue for our event. Without clubs like Orwell, Appleseed would have a difficult task of bringing heritage and marksmanship to our audience. Thanks for the use of your range, and for providing lunch for us.
Huzzah! What a great weekend at Orwell gun club! And there wasnt any mud too!
Thanks for all that came and persisted throughout the weekend, hope to have you come back sometime in the future.
Looks like you had a great event. Huzzah!

Events at Orwell are always a blast. We had a great crew to work this event and a great group of students that just drank with gusto from the fire hose of instruction.
A big thanks to Kathy, Darren and Lew(members of the club) that came out also to help with this event. We appreciate everything that you did. Makes things run smoothly all weekend.
It was great to see that LawOH was able to join us this weekend as part of the instructor crew. Especially for me because I did not have to be the gumby for sitting/kneeling for once.
The shooters ringing the steel afterwards was fun. Most of them using 22LR. DOM got real tired of calling out Hit. Hit. Hit. Hit. Time after time.
Thanks to all for making another event at Orwell a success.
