Title: IS PROJECT APPLESEED DEAD IN NEW YORK?
Post by: sgtmarine on June 12, 2018, 10:18:29 PM
No new shoots posted. Grumpy 1 is moving on getting ready for retirement. No one, of all the Red Hats is stepping up to fill his shoes as Shoot Boss.
Last shoot at Sara Spar had 33 shooters... There is interest in the program...

I was pulled off fighting the anti-second amendment groups here in downstate new york.  I've been busy fighting them in the legislative chambers.  I could start coming to the shoots again to help out.  I'm an orange hat though.  Let me know how we're doing on red hat and orange hat numbers.

I would recommend getting in contact with your State Coordinator.
Past that, I would have your PCs ready to go and go to as many shoots as you can.  Promote levels.  Build your team.

Become that Shoot Boss.

Difficult question to answer, especially when there are many unknowns at this time.

I know in the past that the IT corps has had set backs in getting and keeping ranges in NY. Some commercial ranges had changed their hours of operation and made it tough to run a decent event in the time allotted, even for 2 days. Another instance was a change to the layout of the berms at one range, making it an unsafe condition.

The number of shooters that sign on show there is a need for Appleseed in New York, no doubt about it. Getting host ranges to commit and keep it available isn't as easy as you may think. State, county and sometimes local laws make it untenable.

In Ct we lost one range, for this year, when it was discovered the backstop needed to be rebuilt. A few weeks later a tornado tore thru that area and did a number on the property, in general.  We've had others when when asked to host a shoot they opted out with busy schedules, already filled calendars, etc. It isn't easy to keep things running as would seem 'as usual'.

I hope events can be posted this year for NY, as the northeast and the country at large needs them. Traveling to other states with various laws, travel and overnight accommodations make it hard on those who need and want to get active in AS.

If lack of a venue is the problem I may be able to help....

I recently attended my first ever Appleseed event, in fact I met SgtMarine in Proctor Vt. I loved the program and want to see if we can get it going locally.

I belong to a club that I might be able to offer up to host a match in northern Dutchess County. I will pitch it to the membership and see what happens.

Can you tell me what is expected of a club that hosts a match?

To my knowledge we have no Appleseed instructors in our club...that may change with time, but for now we will need some outside help.

Thanks!

Hey, how did you make out at Proctor? Sorry I had to leave at noon on Sunday. Fathers day and all...

Not bad, no patch this time but I learned a lot and really enjoyed the experience.  I'm looking forward to the next one.

Do you think we have any instructors locally that would help out if I can get my club to agree to host?

Can you tell me what is expected of a club that hosts a match?

Thanks!

The first step is to get the club to agree. Next step is to fill out a 'Host Application' which shows the club is serious about hosting an event and gets the ball rolling.

You can PM me if you get to that stage and we'll get things going.

We expect the club to help get the word out to range members and to support us as needed. The instructors pretty much take care of everything at the events.

A rifleman persists! Keep it up and remember to practice getting into position and dry practice at home when you can! You’ll get it, no doubt!

You have a place to crash if you want to shoot out here!

Well...sadly I spoke too soon...due to lack of staffing the shoot will not be held. The range is ready, willing and able...but we need appleseed certified event staff. We are setting up the calendar for the year so I had to relinquish the dates we had set aside..any shoot bosses that would like to set something up let me know.  :(

Come on NY dust off the hats.

Sorry, what does "Appleseed certified event staff" mean?

Monkey it means you get to full fill one of your stated 2019 Appleseed goals and Shootboss a shoot in New York! ;D ;D ;D

No doubt, right?  When the opportunity presents itself... ;D

In all seriousness, I'd be willing to take a trek up there, if it helps regain a foot hold in disputed territory.

My schedule is currently open.

What's the proposed capacity gap?  I know a few folks that might could help...

BabyHuey, the best thing is to get the event listed a minimum of 60 days out, then a staff can be fielded for said event.

Trying to get one, especially at a new venue, isn't easy and the more lead time available to set up and get staffed the better it will be.

If you can get the event back on the schedule.

Get it listed on the Appleseed schedule.  It sounds like you have a Shootboss.  Put a post in the "Appleseed Jump Team" section that you need staff.  If you can't post there or it is no longer active we can get the word out and light a fire under some people.

If you don't have events and get new volunteers the mission will be lost in NY.  It will spread from there.  We are fighting Bloomberg and Soros in Pittsburg. !@#)

People can't sign up for a shoot that doesn't exist.

From the info I have there is an insurance issue with this range. Not 100% certain but  I have been keeping my eye on this matter.
As already mentioned get the date set up and we’ll go from there.
Hopefully I’ll be up and running again by then (broken leg) and I’ll Shoot Boss it.
I might not be 100% but good enough to do what needs to be done with a few IIT’s and/or RH’s.

What is the name/location of the Club?
How many shooters can this range fit on the line?

First lets get a confirmed date. Late June sounds good. Get it on the schedule.
Once we have that we’ll build our Instructor Team.
Then we’ll promote the event.

Step by step.

Appleseed is NOT dead in New York.
It’s just been difficult with the legal issues thrown at us and the Ranges, Instructors having personal issues to deal with.

NO RETREAT......NEVER SURRENDER! 🇺🇸

Still no events scheduled for New York for 2019?

I am in North East OH. Willing to take vacation if needed and make the drive.

There are events in OH and PA that are somewhat close to NY.

Not yet, still hibernating me thinks.  ;)

And I'm sure the NY crew appreciates your willingness to help Cdh, it's unfortunately been the perfect storm for the SB's in state.

I'm available to a degree to help, have always wanted to, and it may be the year for me to do so. In the past the NY crew have traveled much into parts unknown for the cause, even behind the lines in Ct. Hope we can return the favor.

Folks,
Dunham's Bay S of Lake George hosted once or twice a year, and will do again (know Club President well) if we can reactivate Sgt. Rock...SaraSpa outside Saratoga, as well as Hudson Falls Fish and Game (am life member of both...) - all three north of Albany are activatable if we have a cadre of instructors...
Dunham's Bay has 50 firing points outdoors, but we'd have to share range as we have in past...
There's hope...

I wish you the best of luck.  I know the Upstate is not so bad but see all of NY as virually lost to the enemy.  If any place need an infusion of liberty, it is NY.

As it happens, there's a Shoot Boss not all that far away in VT who's trying to get more active (after having taken some years off due to life intruding).

So... sing out if I can assist.

Oh, BTW... Are B9 and zercool still active? Worked a shoot with.them in Throop many years ago.

Luv2BFree and I might make it down for this one.

Is there a motel nearby? Preferably something better than *shudder* Motel 6? (stayed at one once. NEVER AGAIN.)
