Title: Hello and questions about upcoming event (LeRoy, IL)
Post by: CBruce on September 05, 2017, 05:28:03 PM
Hello. I've been to a few Appleseed events at LeRoy now, and I'm interested in bringing my whole family with me for the upcoming event on Sept 16-17. But there are a few wrinkles I'd like to run by you guys beforehand.

Here's who will be attending this time:
1) Myself - 44 (not shooting)
2) Jess (my wife) - 38
3) William - 13
4) Robert - 9

First, I don't have enough rifles. I don't intend to shoot this time (plan to shadow Robert most of the time instead), but I only have a single Ruger 10/22. So we'd need at least 2 loaners for the kids.

Second, William is on the spectrum and currently says he doesn't want to attend. (He had a bad experience at a range when he was younger--my fault--and he's been gun-shy ever since). But, I'm insisting that he goes because we have guns in the house and it's important that firearm safety be as ingrained in his stubborn head as possible. I'm predicting that he'll be very reluctant at first, then quickly get into it once holes start showing up in paper, and then likely get bored/frustrated and want to quit a bit later in the day. He's very stubborn about taking instruction from his parents, but I'm hoping he'll be more open to an instructor, but it's always a crap shoot with him and we'll have to play it by ear.

Third, Robert is still fairly young and energetic so he's going to need a lot of oversight. He's *super* excited about 'getting to shoot a gun', so it's mainly going to be reigning in his eagerness and making sure he can learn how to do it safely. There's also a good chance that he'll get bored as well, but if him and William start feeling competitive they could feed off of each other all weekend (fingers crossed).

Fourth, Jessica has to work Saturday morning, so probably can't make it out until 9:30-10:00 at the earliest. I can work with her (and the boys) on the safety protocols before the event, get her set up and sighted in, but I'd rather not try and tackle any of the basic instructions and let the instructors/SB do their thing.

Anything here that's a cause for concern or issue that can't be accommodated?

We'll figure it out. They'll learn and we'll follow the safety rules. We'll adapt and do what is needed. We'll hear some great history.
